Which plan fits an Italy trip

There is no Italy-only plan here. Every plan on this page is a bundle: the Europe plan covers Italy and 29 other countries, and the Global 75 and Global 170 plans reach further. Your data allowance is shared across every country on the list, so a trip that starts in Rome and ends in Paris or Zurich runs on one eSIM, installed once. Pick by trip:

  • A week in Rome and Florence: the 7 day plan with 1.5 GB a day covers maps, train and museum bookings, messaging and photos. Take the 7 day unlimited plan if you make video calls or share your connection with a laptop.
  • Two weeks with France or Switzerland: the 15 day Europe plan, daily or unlimited. It keeps working when you cross to Nice, Paris, Zurich or Lugano, because France, Switzerland and Liechtenstein are all on its list.
  • A month or longer: the 30 day Europe plan with 1.5 GB a day. Unlimited plans run up to 15 days.
  • A long weekend or a layover: the 3 and 5 day plans, or the one-day plan for a single day in transit.
  • Italy plus a country the Europe plan leaves out: Monaco, Norway, Iceland, Turkey and the Balkan countries outside the EU, such as Albania and Montenegro, are not on the Europe list. The Global 170 plan covers all of them. The Global 75 plan covers Norway, Iceland, Turkey, Albania and Montenegro but not Monaco. Both also cover the United States and Canada.

On the daily plans, speed drops sharply once the day's 1.5 GB is used and comes back when the allowance resets. See fixed, daily or unlimited for how each type behaves, and eSIM for Europe for planning a trip across several countries.

Coverage across Italy

Coverage is strong in Rome, Milan, Florence, Venice, Naples and Bologna, and along the main roads and high-speed rail lines between them.

  • The Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre: the towns are covered, but cliffs and coves block the signal in places, on the coast road and on the footpaths between villages.
  • Sicily and Sardinia: cities, airports and the main resort towns are well covered. The mountainous interior and remote beaches are thinner.
  • The Alps and the Dolomites: deep valleys and high trails have gaps.
  • Ferries: the signal holds near the coast and fades far out at sea.

Before a hiking day, a drive through the countryside or a long ferry crossing, download offline maps and save your tickets to the phone.

Vatican City and San Marino are not on the country list of any plan we sell. Both sit inside Italy, so your phone may well stay on an Italian network there, but we cannot promise it. If the eSIM drops while you are in either, choose an Italian network by hand in your phone's settings, and download what you need before you go.

On the train

The eSIM works on trains wherever the line has signal. Expect short drops in tunnels: much of the high-speed line between Florence and Bologna runs under the Apennines, and the coastal line through the Cinque Terre runs mostly in tunnels between the villages. Frecciarossa and Italo high-speed trains have onboard Wi-Fi as a backup, and having your own data means you can check platforms, connections and strike notices without it.

Arriving at the airport

Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi a day or two before you fly. When you land, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line only and keep it off on your usual SIM. You can then check the train or bus into town, open a taxi app or message your hotel from the arrivals hall, without hunting for airport Wi-Fi. Our arrival guides cover Rome Fiumicino and Milan Malpensa: the free Wi-Fi and where to buy a SIM after arrivals.

How much data do you need?

Most visitors use about 1 GB a day for maps, messaging, photos and booking trains and museum slots. Video calls, streaming and sharing your connection with a laptop push that up quickly. For a long stay with remote work, look at the unlimited plans.

eSIM or roaming?

Most US carriers charge a daily fee for each day you use your phone abroad, or limit what is included. Check your own plan first: our guides to AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Mint Mobile set out what each one includes and costs abroad. Travelers from Canada, the UK and Australia usually pay roaming fees too. If your phone plan is from an EU country, roaming in Italy is generally charged at home rates for normal use, so you may not need a travel eSIM at all. More in travel eSIM vs international roaming.

Before you go

  • Entering Italy: passports are now registered at Schengen borders under the EES. Read Entering Europe in 2026 for what it means and when ETIAS starts.
  • Strikes: transport strikes in Italy are announced in advance. See the Italy strike calendar before you book a train or a flight.
  • Venice in winter: the Venice Carnival 2027 guide has the dates, the access fee and getting in from the airport.

How our Italy plans compare

Start from how much data you use in a day, then compare what the whole trip costs. Most competitor plans for Italy cover Italy alone, so check the country list if your trip carries on across the border. Our own prices are on the plan cards above, always current.

Provider One week Two weeks What to know
eSIM Lounge 1.5 GB a day, or unlimited 1.5 GB a day, or unlimited, for 15 days Prices on the plan cards above. Every plan is a Europe plan, at no extra cost. Unlimited keeps full speed for the first 5 GB each day.
Airalo 5 GB: $10.00. 10 GB: $17.00. Unlimited: $23.00 10 GB: $18.00. 20 GB: $25.00. Unlimited: $44.00 Italy only, on WindTre. Unlimited slows to 1 Mbps after a daily allowance. Its Europe unlimited plan costs $27.00 for 7 days.
Holafly Unlimited: $23.90 Unlimited: $44.50 Italy only, on Vodafone and WindTre. Unlimited with no published daily limit, but hotspot sharing is capped at 1 GB a day. Its Europe plan costs $27.50 for 7 days and $51.50 for 15.
Nomad Unlimited: $25.00. 10 GB for 30 days: $18.50 20 GB for 30 days: $25.00 Italy only, on Iliad and Vodafone. Unlimited gives 2 GB a day at full speed and stops at 10 days ($33.00).
Saily Unlimited for 5 days: $18.99. 10 GB for 30 days: $20.99 Unlimited for 15 days: $48.99. 20 GB for 30 days: $28.99 No 7 day unlimited plan for Italy: the next step up is 10 days at $34.99. Its Europe unlimited plan costs $28.99 for 7 days.

Which to pick:

  • A week of steady use: our 1.5 GB a day plan gives 10.5 GB over the week. When we checked, it cost less than Airalo's 10 GB at $17.00, Nomad's at $18.50 and Saily's at $20.99. A fixed 10 GB lets you use more on one day and less on another. If 5 GB will do, Airalo's $10.00 plan is the cheapest we found.
  • Two weeks: our 15 day plan gives 22.5 GB. When we checked, it cost less than the 20 GB plans from Airalo ($25.00), Nomad ($25.00) and Saily ($28.99). If 10 GB is enough for the whole trip, Airalo's $18.00 plan is the cheapest we found.
  • A week of unlimited: when we checked, ours cost less than Airalo ($23.00), Holafly ($23.90) and Nomad ($25.00), with full speed for 5 GB a day against Nomad's 2 GB. For a stay of five days or less, compare Saily's 5 day plan at $18.99 with ours.
  • Two weeks of unlimited: when we checked, ours cost less than Airalo ($44.00), Holafly ($44.50) and Saily ($48.99). Nomad's unlimited stops at 10 days. If you need more than 5 GB a day at full speed, Holafly publishes no daily limit.
  • Italy and its neighbors: the competitor prices above are for Italy-only plans. To carry on to France, Switzerland or Greece on one eSIM, their Europe unlimited plans cost more for a week: Airalo $27.00, Holafly $27.50 and Saily $28.99.

Competitor prices checked on 10 October 2026 in US dollars, on each provider's site or, where it would not load or gave no US dollar price, on esimDB. They change often.

Networks in Italy

Italy has four mobile networks: TIM, Vodafone, WindTre and Iliad. A travel eSIM connects to one of them as a roaming partner, which is why data roaming must be on for the eSIM line. All four cover the cities and the main transport routes; differences show up in the countryside, the mountains and on the islands. The partner network can differ from plan to plan, so check the plan details, or ask us at support@esimlounge.com before you buy.

How to install your eSIM

Install it at home before you fly, then switch it on when you land.

  1. Check your phone

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier unlocked. Most phones from the last few years do.

  2. Scan the QR code

Scan the code from your email while you still have Wi-Fi at home. It takes about two minutes.

  3. Switch on when you land

Turn on the eSIM line and data roaming for it. Keep your usual SIM for calls and texts if you like.

Italy eSIM questions

What is the best eSIM for Italy?

It depends on how you use your phone and where else you are going. For a week of maps, messaging and photos, a daily plan with 1.5 GB a day is enough for most people. If you stream, make video calls or share your connection, take unlimited. If your trip also takes in France, Switzerland or another neighbor, a Europe plan saves you a second install. The comparison above sets our plans against Airalo, Holafly, Nomad and Saily.

Does an eSIM work in Vatican City and San Marino?

Neither is on the country list of any plan we sell. Both sit inside Italy, so your phone may stay on an Italian network there, but we cannot promise it. If the eSIM drops, choose an Italian network by hand in your phone's settings.

Can I use one eSIM for Italy and Switzerland?

Yes. Switzerland is outside the EU, but it is on the Europe plan's list of 30 countries, with Italy, France, Liechtenstein and the United Kingdom. Your phone joins a Swiss partner network when you cross the border. Monaco is not on the Europe list: the Global 170 plan covers it.

Will my US phone work in Italy?

Most recent US phones work on Italian networks. To use a travel eSIM, the phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked: the 30-second check tells you. Your US SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts while the eSIM carries your data, so keep data roaming off on your US line to avoid your carrier's daily fees.

Do I need an Italian SIM card?

Not for data. An Italian SIM is sold in shops and at some airports and must be registered with your passport, while a travel eSIM is installed at home before you fly. Our plans are data only and come without an Italian number. If a restaurant or a tour asks for a number, your own number or a messaging app usually works.

Does the eSIM work on trains between cities?

Yes, wherever the line has signal. Expect short drops in tunnels, for example on the high-speed line between Florence and Bologna and on the Cinque Terre line. Frecciarossa and Italo trains also have onboard Wi-Fi.

When does the plan start counting days?

On most plans the days start when the eSIM first connects to a network in a covered country, not when you install it. The plan details say how yours works.
