T-Mobile international roaming in 2026: passes, prices and when an eSIM is cheaper

T-Mobile works in 215+ countries and destinations, including Japan and Mexico. Most of its current plans include some high-speed data abroad, and an International Pass adds more: $10 for one day, $50 for 10 days or $75 for 30 days. Whether that is enough depends on your plan, how long you travel and how much data you use. Here is what each plan gives you, what the passes cost, and when a travel eSIM is the cheaper way to get data.

A week in Japan? Seven 1 Day passes come to $70, and the 10 Day pass to $50. Our 7-day Japan plan with 1.5 GB a day costs $11.99, and 40 GB for 7 days $13.99.

What each T-Mobile plan includes abroad

Plan 215+ countries and destinations Canada and Mexico
Experience Beyond (and Go5G Next) 15 GB high-speed data, then unlimited at up to 256 kbps. Texts free, calls $0.50 a minute Calls and texts included. Up to 30 GB high-speed data, then up to 256 kbps
Experience More (and Go5G Plus, Magenta MAX) 5 GB high-speed data, then unlimited at up to 256 kbps. Texts free, calls $0.50 a minute Calls and texts included. Up to 15 GB high-speed data on Experience More, then up to 256 kbps
Essentials No data. Texts free, calls $0.50 a minute. Buy a pass for data Data at up to 128 kbps only
Go5G Check your plan in the T-Life app Up to 10 GB high-speed data, then up to 128 kbps
Magenta, ONE, Plus Check your plan in the T-Life app Up to 5 GB high-speed data, then up to 128 kbps

A few rules apply to every plan:

  • Incoming calls cost too. If your phone is on and a call comes in, T-Mobile charges one minute at the roaming rate, even if it goes to voicemail.
  • Wi-Fi calls are not free everywhere. Wi-Fi calls to the US, Canada and Mexico cost nothing; other Wi-Fi calls from abroad are $0.50 a minute.
  • More than 20 destinations are excluded. There, calls, texts and data are pay-per-use and passes do not work. Check T-Mobile's list before you fly.
  • Prepaid lines get no international data roaming, according to T-Mobile's rates page. Pay-in-advance and No Credit Check plans are also excluded from the Essentials benefit.
  • It is for trips, not moving abroad. T-Mobile's terms say service may be restricted for excessive roaming, and primary use must be on its US network.

International Pass options and prices

An International Pass adds high-speed data and unlimited calling in the same 215+ countries and destinations. You buy it in the T-Life app or at My T-Mobile, and you can choose the day it starts.

Pass Price High-speed data Lasts
1 Day $10 2 GB 24 hours
10 Day $50 15 GB 10 days
30 Day $75 30 GB 30 days

How the passes work:

  • One pass at a time. Buying a new one ends what is left of the old one, and its clock starts over.
  • No daily cap. You can use the pass's data however you like within its period.
  • When the data runs out, you drop back to your plan's roaming speed. On a plan without international data, such as Essentials, that is up to 128 kbps until the pass ends.
  • You can use it as a hotspot. T-Mobile says pass data works for tethering.

Older pages and articles still quote a $5 day pass with 512 MB. T-Mobile's own pass page now lists $10 for 2 GB.

The slow-data catch

Once your high-speed allowance is gone, data is "unlimited" at 256 kbps on Experience plans, and 128 kbps on others. That is enough for messages and email. Maps load slowly, ride-hailing apps lag, and photo uploads crawl.

T-Mobile texts you at 80% of your allowance and again when it is used up, with an offer to buy a pass.

Most travelers use about 1 GB a day. On Experience More, 5 GB of high-speed data is roughly five days of normal use. On Experience Beyond, 15 GB covers a week or two for most people. If that matches your trip, T-Mobile's included roaming is enough, and you do not need anything else.

When a travel eSIM is cheaper

A travel eSIM is a data-only plan you add to your phone as a second line. You pay once for a set amount of data and days. It works out cheaper when:

  • You are on Essentials. It includes no data outside Canada and Mexico, so every trip means buying a pass.
  • You would stack day passes. A week on 1 Day passes is $70. The 10 Day pass is $50, even for a 5-day trip. A week-long data plan for one country usually costs less than either.
  • Your plan's allowance will not last the trip. 5 GB on Experience More goes fast with maps, video calls or a laptop on hotspot. Topping up with a pass costs $50 for the next 15 GB.
  • You are away for a month or more. Long stays are where T-Mobile's "not for extended international use" terms apply.

Do the sum for your own trip: divide the pass price by your days abroad, then compare it with a plan sized for the whole stay. Our Japan and Mexico pages show current plans side by side, and travel eSIM vs roaming explains how each one bills.

How to use both: T-Mobile for calls, an eSIM for data

You do not have to choose. The usual setup keeps your T-Mobile number for calls and texts and puts data on the eSIM.

  1. Check your phone supports eSIM (the 30-second check) and is unlocked (how to check, and T-Mobile's unlock rules).
  2. Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi: iPhone or Android.
  3. When you land, set the eSIM as the line for mobile data and turn data roaming on for it.
  4. On your T-Mobile line, turn data roaming off if you want to keep your allowance or avoid pass offers. Leave the line on so texts reach you.
  5. Turn off automatic data switching (iPhone: "Allow Cellular Data Switching"), so a weak signal never moves data back to T-Mobile.

Texts on your T-Mobile line stay free in covered destinations. Calls still cost $0.50 a minute unless you have a pass, so WhatsApp or FaceTime over the eSIM's data is the cheaper way to call home.

Every switch, step by step: how to avoid international roaming charges.

FAQ

Does T-Mobile work in Japan?

Yes. Japan is one of T-Mobile's 215+ covered countries and destinations. Experience Beyond includes 15 GB of high-speed data there, and Experience More 5 GB, then up to 256 kbps. Essentials gets free texts and $0.50-a-minute calls but no data without a pass. See our Japan eSIM page if you need more data.

Does T-Mobile work in Mexico?

Yes. Mexico, like Canada, is treated almost like home: calls and texts are included on Experience plans, with up to 30 GB of high-speed data on Experience Beyond and 15 GB on Experience More, then up to 256 kbps. Essentials gets data at up to 128 kbps. Our guide will my phone work in Mexico compares the US carriers there.

How much is the T-Mobile International Pass?

$10 for 1 day with 2 GB, $50 for 10 days with 15 GB, and $75 for 30 days with 30 GB. Each includes unlimited calling in 215+ countries and destinations.

Which countries does the International Pass cover?

The same 215+ countries and destinations as T-Mobile's plan benefits. More than 20 are excluded and charged pay-per-use; T-Mobile publishes both lists on its international roaming services page.

What are T-Mobile's roaming charges without a pass?

In covered destinations, texts are free and calls are $0.50 a minute, including incoming calls. Data depends on your plan: high-speed up to its allowance, then 256 or 128 kbps, or none on Essentials. In excluded destinations everything is charged at that country's rates.

Can I keep my T-Mobile number and use a travel eSIM?

Yes. Your T-Mobile line stays on for calls and texts while the eSIM carries the data. Just set the eSIM as your data line and turn off data roaming on T-Mobile.
