Mexico eSIM

The best eSIM for Mexico keeps you online from the moment you land in Canc煤n, Mexico City or Los Cabos, without a stop at the SIM sellers in arrivals. Choose daily or unlimited data, install it at home before you fly, and keep your usual number for calls and texts while the eSIM handles maps, rides and WhatsApp.

Which plan fits a Mexico trip

The Mexico plans cover Mexico only. The Global 170 plans below them also cover Mexico, together with the United States, Canada and more than 160 other countries. Pick by trip:

  • A week in Canc煤n or Tulum: the 7 day plan with 1.5 GB a day covers maps, rides, messaging, photos and the odd video call. Take the 7 day unlimited plan if you stream, work online or share your connection with a laptop.
  • Two weeks or a longer loop: the 15 day plan with 1.5 GB a day, for a trip that takes in Mexico City, Oaxaca and the coast. Our unlimited plans run up to 7 days.
  • A month or longer: the 30 day plan with 1.5 GB a day.
  • A long weekend or a cruise stop: the 3 and 5 day plans, daily or unlimited, or the one-day plan for a single day ashore.
  • Mexico and the United States on one trip: a Global 170 plan, below.

On the daily plans, speed slows once the day's 1.5 GB is used and comes back when the allowance resets the next day. See fixed, daily or unlimited for how each type behaves.

Coverage across Mexico

Coverage is strong in the cities and the main resort areas, and thins in the places that make Mexico worth the trip:

  • Mexico City: good across the city. Large crowds, such as the Day of the Dead parade, can slow data for everyone nearby.
  • Canc煤n, the Riviera Maya and Tulum: good in the hotel zone and in the towns along the coast road. It drops underground in cenotes and in the jungle around ruins such as Cob谩, and can be weak on the islands.
  • The Yucat谩n interior: cities such as M茅rida and Valladolid are well covered, but the roads between villages and the sites deeper in the forest, such as Calakmul, have long gaps.
  • Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta: good in town and along the hotel corridors. Beaches and villages reached only by boat or dirt road are thinner.
  • Oaxaca: good in Oaxaca city. The mountain villages and parts of the Pacific coast have gaps.
  • The Copper Canyon: expect long stretches without signal on the Chepe railway and the canyon roads between towns.
  • Border towns: close to the US border your phone can pick up a US network. A Mexico plan works only on Mexican networks, so if the eSIM drops there, choose a Mexican network by hand in your phone's settings, or use a Global 170 plan, which covers both countries.

Before a road trip, a day at the cenotes or a train ride through the canyon, download offline maps and save your tickets and hotel confirmations to the phone.

Mexico and the United States on one trip

The Mexico plans do not work in the United States. The Global 170 plans cover both, plus Canada, Guatemala and Belize, with one install: 1.5 GB a day for 7 or 15 days, or 5 GB for 30 days. Your allowance is shared across every country on the list. For a trip that is mostly in the US, see our United States eSIM page.

Arriving at the airport

Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi a day or two before you fly. When you land, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line only and keep it off on your usual SIM, unless your home plan includes Mexico. You can then message your driver, check the bus or open a ride app before you reach the arrivals hall, where people offer transport, tours and SIM cards. Our arrival guides cover Canc煤n, Mexico City and Los Cabos: the free Wi-Fi, where SIM cards are sold after arrivals, and tips for staying connected.

How much data do you need?

Most visitors use about 1 GB a day for maps, ride-hailing, messaging and photos. Video calls, streaming and sharing your connection with a laptop push that up quickly, so remote workers in Mexico City or Tulum are better served by an unlimited plan.

eSIM or roaming?

Many US phone plans include Mexico, so check yours before you buy anything:

If your plan includes Mexico at full speed and you use an average amount of data, you may not need a travel eSIM. One still makes sense when your plan slows you down or charges by the day, when you need more data than your allowance, or when you stay for weeks. Travelers from the UK and Australia rarely have Mexico included and usually pay for roaming by the day or by pass, so check with your carrier. Our guide will my phone work in Mexico? sets out what each US carrier gives you there.

Before you go

How our Mexico plans compare

Start from how much data you use in a day, then compare what the whole trip costs. On unlimited plans, check how much you get at full speed each day: that is where providers differ most. Our own prices are on the plan cards above, always current.

Provider One week Two weeks What to know
eSIM Lounge 1.5 GB a day, or unlimited 1.5 GB a day for 15 days Prices on the plan cards above. Unlimited keeps full speed for the first 5 GB each day. No unlimited plan longer than 7 days. The Global 170 plans also cover the US and Canada.
Airalo 5 GB: $12.00. 10 GB: $17.00. Unlimited: $23.50 10 GB: $17.50. 20 GB: $29.50. Unlimited: $43.00 Unlimited slows to 1 Mbps after 3 GB a day. Plans can be topped up.
Holafly Unlimited: $24.50 Unlimited: $44.90 Unlimited only, on Movistar and Telcel, with no published daily allowance; a fair-use policy can slow speeds for a day. Hotspot sharing is capped at 1 GB a day.
Nomad Unlimited: $22.00. 10 GB for 30 days: $15.50 20 GB for 30 days: $27.50 Unlimited gives 2 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps, and stops at 10 days ($30.00). Runs on AT&T and Movistar.
Saily Unlimited for 5 days: $18.99. 10 GB for 30 days: $24.99 Unlimited for 15 days: $48.99. 20 GB for 30 days: $45.99 Unlimited slows after 3 GB a day. No 7 day unlimited plan: the next step up is 10 days at $34.99. Ad blocking is built into the app.
Ubigi 10 GB: $22.00. 20 GB, then 2 Mbps: $36.00 5 GB a day for 15 days, then 2 Mbps: $58.00 Also sells 10 GB for 30 days at $24.00.

Which to pick:

  • A week of steady use: our 1.5 GB a day plan gives 10.5 GB over the week. When we checked, it cost less than the 10 GB plans from Nomad ($15.50), Airalo ($17.00), Ubigi ($22.00) and Saily ($24.99). A fixed 10 GB lets you use more on one day and less on another. If 5 GB will do for the week, Airalo's $12.00 plan is cheaper.
  • Two weeks: our 15 day plan gives 22.5 GB. When we checked, it cost less than the 20 GB plans from Nomad ($27.50), Airalo ($29.50) and Saily ($45.99). If 10 GB is enough for the whole trip, Nomad's $15.50 plan is the cheapest we found.
  • A week of unlimited: when we checked, Nomad ($22.00) and Airalo ($23.50) cost less than ours, and Holafly ($24.50) about the same. What ours adds is speed: full speed for 5 GB a day, against 2 GB on Nomad and 3 GB on Airalo. If you rarely pass 2 or 3 GB a day, take the cheaper plan.
  • Two weeks of unlimited: we do not sell it. Airalo at $43.00 is the cheapest we found, then Holafly at $44.90 and Saily at $48.99. If 1.5 GB a day is enough, our 15 day daily plan is the simpler buy.

Competitor prices checked on 11 October 2026 in US dollars, on Holafly's own site and, for the others, on esimDB. They change often.

Networks in Mexico

Mexico's largest mobile network is Telcel, with the widest coverage across the country, followed by AT&T Mexico. Movistar Mexico runs on AT&T's network under an agreement signed in 2019, so a Movistar connection reaches the same places as AT&T. A travel eSIM connects to one of them as a roaming partner, which is why data roaming must be on for the eSIM line. Telcel tends to reach further in rural areas, so the partner network matters most off the main routes. It can differ from plan to plan: check the plan details, or ask us at support@esimlounge.com before you buy.

How to install your eSIM

Install it at home before you fly, then switch it on when you land.

  1. Check your phone

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier unlocked. Most phones from the last few years do.

  2. Scan the QR code

Scan the code from your email while you still have Wi-Fi at home. It takes about two minutes.

  3. Switch on when you land

Turn on the eSIM line and data roaming for it. Keep your usual SIM for calls and texts if you like.

Mexico eSIM questions

What is the best eSIM for Mexico?

It depends on how you use your phone and where else you are going. For a week of maps, rides, messaging and photos, a daily plan with 1.5 GB a day is enough for most people. If you stream, make video calls or share your connection, take unlimited. If your trip continues to the United States or Canada, a Global 170 plan covers both on one install. The comparison above sets our plans against Airalo, Holafly, Nomad, Saily and Ubigi.

Does my US phone plan already include Mexico?

Often, yes. AT&T unlimited plans, Verizon Unlimited plans, most T-Mobile plans, and Visible+ and Visible+ Pro include Mexico, some with a limit on high-speed data. Mint Mobile does not: you buy a pass. Check your plan in your carrier's app, and see will my phone work in Mexico? for the details.

Does it work in Tulum, the Riviera Maya and at the cenotes?

In the towns and hotel zones along the coast, yes. The signal drops underground in cenotes, in the jungle around ruins such as Cob谩, and on some islands and remote beaches, so download offline maps before day trips.

Can I use one eSIM for Mexico and the United States?

Not with a Mexico plan, which works only on Mexican networks. The Global 170 plans cover Mexico, the United States and Canada on one install, with the allowance shared across every country on the list.

Should I buy a SIM card at the airport instead?

For data, an eSIM is simpler: you set it up at home, skip the sellers in the arrivals hall and keep your usual SIM in the phone. A Mexican SIM gives you a local number, which a travel eSIM does not, but new Mexican lines must now be registered with your passport. See Mexico SIM card or eSIM in 2026.

Will I keep my phone number?

Yes. Your usual SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts, and the eSIM carries your mobile data. Keep data roaming off on your usual SIM unless your home plan includes Mexico, to avoid roaming fees.

When does the plan start counting days?

On most plans the days start when the eSIM first connects to a network in Mexico, not when you install it. The plan details say how yours works.
