Getting online at Cancún International Airport

Cancún International Airport (CUN) serves Cancún. Here is how to get online from the moment you land: the free Wi-Fi, where SIM cards are sold, and the eSIM you can install before you fly.

Free Wi-Fi at CUN

The free network in the passenger terminals is CUN Wi-Fi. Pick it, then wait for the login page to open in your browser (if it does not, open any website and it should appear). There is no password, but the free session is time-limited: recent reports put it at about an hour, and the login page shows the current limit. Lounges in Terminals 2, 3 and 4 have their own Wi-Fi for their guests.

Treat it as a backup. It is built for the halls, so do not count on it outside, at the transport area, which is exactly where you need to message a driver or check a bus time.

Buying a SIM card after arrivals

After customs, you walk through a hall where people offer transport, tours and SIM cards. Reports from 2026 differ on whether Telcel itself has a counter (one is often placed in Terminal 3, near baggage claim and the exits), and the SIM stands in the terminals are known for tourist prices: travelers report paying around US$50 for a few gigabytes. The same Telcel prepaid plans cost far less in town, at Telcel shops and OXXO convenience stores, where packages start at about 100 to 200 pesos (October 2026).

Whichever you buy, a new Mexican line now has to be registered to you before it works normally, and a visitor does that with a passport. Bring it, and allow time for the registration on top of the queue. A travel eSIM from abroad is not a Mexican line and needs no registration: see Mexico SIM card or eSIM in 2026.

Mobile networks in Mexico

Mexico's largest mobile network is Telcel, with the widest coverage across the country, followed by AT&T Mexico. Movistar Mexico runs on AT&T's network under an agreement signed in 2019, so a Movistar connection reaches the same places as AT&T. A travel eSIM connects to one of them as a roaming partner, which is why data roaming must be on for the eSIM line. Telcel tends to reach further in rural areas, so the partner network matters most off the main routes. It can differ from plan to plan: check the plan details, or ask us at support@esimlounge.com before you buy.

Tips for staying connected

  • Install before you fly, switch on when you land. Add the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi, then turn on data roaming for the eSIM line once you are off the plane. You will be online at immigration, before the Wi-Fi login or the SIM hall.
  • Know your terminal. Terminals 2, 3 and 4 are separate buildings linked by a free shuttle. Tell your driver or hotel which one you land at, and message them once you are through customs.
  • Keep walking. If your ride is booked, walk past the people offering transport and SIM cards inside the hall, out to the meeting area: drivers wait outside, not in baggage claim or customs.
  • Check your home plan first. Many US plans include Mexico, some only at slow speeds: will my phone work in Mexico? If yours does not, turn data roaming off on your home line before you land.
  • Download offline maps of the Yucatán before a road trip to Tulum, Valladolid or the cenotes: coverage drops inside cenotes, in the jungle around ruins and on long stretches of road.
  • Save your bookings to the phone: ADO bus and Tren Maya tickets, transfer confirmations and hotel addresses, so they open without a signal.

Cancún International Airport questions

Does Cancún airport have free Wi-Fi?

Yes. Connect to CUN Wi-Fi and sign in on the page that opens in your browser; there is no password. Free sessions are time-limited (recent reports say about an hour), and it is built for the halls, so do not count on it outside, where you meet your ride.

Can I buy a SIM card at Cancún airport?

Yes, from stands in the arrivals hall, at tourist prices: travelers report around US$50 for a few gigabytes. The same Telcel prepaid plans cost far less at Telcel shops and OXXO stores in town. Any new Mexican line must be registered with your passport before it works normally.

Do I need to register a SIM card in Mexico as a tourist?

Yes, for a Mexican SIM card or eSIM: since 9 January 2026 every new Mexican line must be linked to its user, and a visitor does it with a passport. Your home line and a travel eSIM bought abroad roam on Mexican networks and need no registration.

Will my US phone work when I land in Cancún?

The phone will. Whether you have fast data depends on your plan: many US plans include Mexico, some only at slow speeds. Check before you fly, or add a travel eSIM for data and keep your US number for calls and texts.

Should I install my eSIM before the flight to Cancún?

Yes. Install it at home on Wi-Fi, since the airport Wi-Fi is time-limited. Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line when you land, and you can message your driver before you reach the arrivals hall.
