Free Wi-Fi at SJD

Los Cabos airport offers free Wi-Fi, but reports differ on how it works and how long it lasts: recent guides describe a free session of about an hour, with a sign-in page in your browser. It is meant for the terminals, so it will not help on the curb outside.

Plan to have your own data on arrival. Many transfer drivers in Los Cabos coordinate by WhatsApp, and the moment you need it is after customs, walking out of Terminal 2.

Buying a SIM card after arrivals

International flights land at Terminal 2; domestic ones at Terminal 1. Reports from 2026 mention Telcel and other carrier kiosks in the arrivals area and small shops selling SIM cards from Mexican networks, but none is guaranteed to be open, especially for late arrivals and in peak season. Prices at the airport are higher than in town, where Telcel shops and OXXO convenience stores in San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas sell the same prepaid plans.

After customs at Terminal 2 you walk through a corridor of timeshare and tour sellers, the "shark tank". Some present themselves as transport or information desks: they are not where SIM cards or your driver are.

Every new Mexican line must be registered to you before it works normally, with your passport. A travel eSIM from abroad needs no registration: see Mexico SIM card or eSIM in 2026. Facts checked in October 2026.

Install one at home before you fly and you are online when the wheels touch down, with no queue at a SIM counter.

Mobile networks in Mexico

Mexico's largest mobile network is Telcel, with the widest coverage across the country, followed by AT&T Mexico. Movistar Mexico runs on AT&T's network under an agreement signed in 2019, so a Movistar connection reaches the same places as AT&T. A travel eSIM connects to one of them as a roaming partner, which is why data roaming must be on for the eSIM line. Telcel tends to reach further in rural areas, so the partner network matters most off the main routes. It can differ from plan to plan: check the plan details, or ask us at support@esimlounge.com before you buy.

Tips for staying connected

  • Install before you fly, switch on when you land. Add the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi and turn on data roaming for it when you land, so WhatsApp works before you reach customs.
  • Walk through the shark tank. If your ride is booked, decline politely and keep walking out of the terminal: drivers wait outside, not at the desks inside.
  • Message your driver once you land. With your data on, send your flight and terminal, so the driver is ready when you come out.
  • Mind the clock. Los Cabos is on UTC−7 all year: an hour behind Mexico City and two behind Cancún. Your phone sets itself once it connects.
  • Check your home plan. Many US plans include Mexico, some only at slow speeds: will my phone work in Mexico?
  • Download offline maps before driving to Todos Santos, La Paz or the East Cape: coverage thins between towns.

Los Cabos International Airport questions

Does Los Cabos airport have free Wi-Fi?

Yes, with a sign-in page in your browser. Recent reports describe a free session of about an hour, inside the terminals only. Have your own data for the curb outside, where you meet your driver.

Can I buy a SIM card at Los Cabos airport?

Sometimes: reports mention carrier kiosks and small shops in arrivals, but none is guaranteed to be open, especially late at night. Telcel shops and OXXO stores in San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas are cheaper. Bring your passport to register a new Mexican line.

What is the shark tank at Los Cabos airport?

The corridor after customs at Terminal 2, where timeshare and tour sellers approach arriving passengers, some presenting themselves as transport desks. If your ride is booked, keep walking out of the terminal: drivers wait outside.

Do I need to register a SIM card in Mexico as a tourist?

Yes, for a Mexican SIM card or eSIM: since 9 January 2026 every new Mexican line must be linked to its user, with a passport for a visitor. Your home line and a travel eSIM bought abroad need no registration.

Should I install my eSIM before flying to Los Cabos?

Yes. Install it at home on Wi-Fi and turn on data roaming for the eSIM line when you land, so you can message your driver on WhatsApp before you walk out of the terminal.
