Free Wi-Fi at MEX

Both terminals have free Wi-Fi, part of Mexico City's public internet program. Guides in 2026 give the network name as Gratis_CDMX_Aeropuerto; pick it and accept the terms on the page that opens. No password or account is needed, and no session limit is published, though it may ask you to sign in again after a while. It covers the boarding areas, corridors and food courts of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.

Speeds drop when several long-haul flights land together. It is fine for a message or a map; for a video call or a long download, use your own data.

Buying a SIM card after arrivals

Mexico City has more choice than most airports, and most of it is in Terminal 1:

  • Telcel store: Telcel's own shop is in Terminal 1, on an upper floor near Gate 5 according to most reports, open roughly 9:00 to 19:00. It is the easiest place for a tourist: staff set the SIM up for you.
  • AT&T Mexico: MOBO shops near Gates 3, 5 and 7 in Terminal 1 sell AT&T SIM cards.
  • Convenience stores: OXXO and 7-Eleven in Terminal 1 sell Telcel SIM cards and top-ups. Terminal 2 (Aeroméxico, Delta, Copa) has mostly convenience stores, so fewer options.

A store SIM sometimes needs setting up by hand, which is harder without Spanish. Late at night only the convenience stores are open.

Every new Mexican line must be registered to you before it works normally, and a visitor does that with a passport, so keep it handy. A travel eSIM from abroad needs no registration: see Mexico SIM card or eSIM in 2026. Facts checked in October 2026.

Mobile networks in Mexico

Mexico's largest mobile network is Telcel, with the widest coverage across the country, followed by AT&T Mexico. Movistar Mexico runs on AT&T's network under an agreement signed in 2019, so a Movistar connection reaches the same places as AT&T. A travel eSIM connects to one of them as a roaming partner, which is why data roaming must be on for the eSIM line. Telcel tends to reach further in rural areas, so the partner network matters most off the main routes. It can differ from plan to plan: check the plan details, or ask us at support@esimlounge.com before you buy.

Tips for staying connected

  • Install before you fly, switch on when you land. Add the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi and turn on data roaming for it when you land. You can book a ride or message your hotel while you wait at immigration.
  • Know your terminal. Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are about 3 km apart on opposite sides of the airfield. The Aerotrén links them for passengers with a boarding pass; a free bus runs between them for everyone.
  • Use the official taxi counters. Pay at the authorized taxi counter inside the terminal and take the ticket to the rank. Turn down anyone who offers a ride in the hall.
  • Ride-hailing works, with data. Uber and DiDi need a working connection when you order and while you look for the car at the pick-up point, outside the Wi-Fi's reach.
  • Check your home plan. Many US plans include Mexico, some only at slow speeds: will my phone work in Mexico?
  • Save your bookings to the phone: hotel address, transfer confirmation and onward flight, so they open without a signal.

Mexico City Benito Juárez International Airport questions

Does Mexico City airport have free Wi-Fi?

Yes, in both terminals, as part of Mexico City's public internet program. Guides in 2026 name the network Gratis_CDMX_Aeropuerto. No password is needed; accept the terms on the page that opens. Speeds drop at busy times.

Where can I buy a SIM card at Mexico City airport?

In Terminal 1: Telcel's own store (open roughly 9:00 to 19:00), AT&T Mexico's MOBO shops, and OXXO and 7-Eleven stores that sell Telcel SIM cards. Terminal 2 has mostly convenience stores. Bring your passport: new Mexican lines must be registered.

Do I need to register a SIM card in Mexico as a tourist?

Yes, for a Mexican SIM card or eSIM: since 9 January 2026 every new Mexican line must be linked to its user, and a visitor does it with a passport. Your home line and a travel eSIM bought abroad need no registration.

Can I use Uber at Mexico City airport?

Yes, with mobile data: you need a connection to order the ride and to find the car at the pick-up point. The official taxi counters inside the terminal are the alternative, paid at the counter before you leave the hall.

Should I install my eSIM before flying to Mexico City?

Yes. Install it at home on Wi-Fi, then turn on data roaming for the eSIM line when you land. You will be online before you reach the arrivals hall, with no SIM shop or queue.
