Will my phone work in Ireland? Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile in 2026

Yes. Any recent US phone works in Ireland. Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile all roam on Irish networks, so you have a signal as soon as you land at Dublin, Shannon or Cork. The question is the price: on Verizon and AT&T, most plans charge $12 a day per line, so a week in Ireland adds $84 per phone. T-Mobile's Experience plans include some data at no extra cost.

The cheaper way for most trips is a travel eSIM for your data: $11.99 for 7 days with 1.5 GB a day, while your US number stays on for calls, texts and bank codes.

What your carrier charges in Ireland

Carrier What you get in Ireland What it costs
Verizon TravelPass: your plan's talk, text and data, 5 GB of high-speed data a day $12 a day per line, or $100 for the International Monthly Plan. Unlimited Ultimate includes 15 GB a month at no extra cost
AT&T International Day Pass: your plan's talk, text and data $12 a day for one line, $6 for each extra line, at most 10 days charged per bill period. Unlimited Elite 2.0 includes 20 GB a month
T-Mobile Included roaming on most plans: 5 GB of high-speed data on Experience More, 15 GB on Experience Beyond, then slow data No extra cost, or a pass from $10 a day for more. Essentials has no data abroad without a pass

The day pass switches itself on. On Verizon and AT&T, one call, one sent text or a background app sync in Ireland starts a day, even if you did not mean to use your phone. What triggers it, and how to avoid it, is in our guides to Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile. On other carriers, such as Mint, Visible, Cricket or Google Fi, the rules range from free data to no roaming at all: check your plan before you fly.

What a trip costs: carrier pass or travel eSIM

For data on one phone, at the prices above:

Trip Verizon TravelPass AT&T Day Pass Our Europe eSIM
7 days $84 $84 $11.99 (1.5 GB a day)
10 days $120 $120 $19.99 (15-day plan, 1.5 GB a day)
7 days, two phones $168 $126 $23.98 (two eSIMs)

A travel eSIM wins on almost every trip of more than a day. Your carrier is the better choice when you are away for a day or two, when T-Mobile's included data is enough for you, or when you are on Verizon Unlimited Ultimate or AT&T Unlimited Elite 2.0 and stay inside their monthly allowance.

Northern Ireland on the same trip

Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, not the Republic of Ireland, so on some phone plans it counts as a different country. There is no border check on the road from Dublin to Belfast, and your phone may switch to a UK network without telling you, sometimes even before you cross, near the border.

On Verizon and AT&T that changes nothing: the UK and Ireland are both covered by the same day pass. With a travel eSIM, check that it covers both countries. Ours does: the Europe eSIM includes Ireland and the United Kingdom, so a trip to Belfast, the Giant's Causeway or the Causeway Coast stays on one eSIM and one allowance.

Coverage on the road

Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick and the main roads between them have good 4G and growing 5G coverage. The west coast is different: on the Wild Atlantic Way, the Ring of Kerry, Connemara and the Dingle Peninsula, signal can drop in valleys, on mountain passes and on remote stretches of coast, on any network.

If you are driving the west:

  • Download offline maps of the region in Google Maps or Apple Maps before you leave Wi-Fi.
  • Save your accommodation's address and phone number offline.
  • Keep the emergency numbers handy: 112 and 999 both work in Ireland and Northern Ireland, even with no credit and a weak signal on another network.

Calls, WhatsApp and bank codes

Keep your US line on for calls and texts. With a travel eSIM, your US number stays active as your voice line, so bank verification codes and texts from your airline still reach you. Turn data roaming off on the US line and use the eSIM for data. On Verizon and AT&T, a call or a sent text on the US line still starts a day pass, so stick to Wi-Fi calling or apps for calls.

Wi-Fi calling is free to US numbers on Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile. On an iPhone, turn Wi-Fi Calling on before you leave the US: Verizon notes it cannot be switched on once you are abroad.

WhatsApp is how Ireland talks. Hotels, guesthouses, tour operators and restaurants often reply on WhatsApp, and it works over your eSIM data like any other app.

Before you fly

  1. Check your phone takes an eSIM and is unlocked. It takes 30 seconds: does my phone support eSIM? and is my phone unlocked? A phone still paid off in installments is often locked to your carrier.
  2. Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi: iPhone or Android. The plan's days start when it first connects in a covered country, not when you install it.
  3. When you land at Dublin, switch the eSIM on as your data line and turn data roaming off on your US line. You are online before baggage claim.
  4. Pack a type G adapter. Ireland and Northern Ireland use the UK's three-pin plug. Phone chargers marked 100 to 240 V only need the adapter, not a converter.

Christmas in Dublin and St Patrick's Day

Two dates bring most Americans to Ireland outside summer. Christmas and New Year in Dublin means markets, lights on Grafton Street and pubs that close early or shut entirely on Christmas Day, so expect to check opening times on your phone. St Patrick's Day 2027 falls on Wednesday 17 March, with Dublin's parade and festival filling the city for several days: crowds slow mobile data in the city center, and with the day pass you pay the same $12 whether it works or not.

Traveling on to London for the holidays? Our Christmas and New Year in London guide covers the dates, and the same Europe eSIM works there. What your US carrier charges in Britain is in will my phone work in the UK?

FAQ

Can I use my US phone in Ireland?

Yes. Any recent US phone works on Irish networks through your carrier's roaming. On Verizon and AT&T most plans charge $12 a day per line; T-Mobile's Experience plans include some high-speed data. A travel eSIM gives you data for a fixed price instead.

Do I need an eSIM for Ireland?

You don't need one, but it usually costs much less than your carrier's day pass. A week of data with our Europe eSIM costs $11.99, against $84 for a week of Verizon TravelPass or AT&T's International Day Pass.

Does Verizon work in Ireland?

Yes. Verizon roams on Irish networks. With TravelPass you pay $12 a day per line and use your plan's talk, text and data, with 5 GB of high-speed data a day. Unlimited Ultimate includes 15 GB a month abroad at no extra cost.

Will my phone work in Northern Ireland?

Yes. Northern Ireland is part of the UK, and US carriers cover it the same way as Ireland. Your phone may switch to a UK network near the border. Our Europe eSIM covers both Ireland and the UK, so one plan does the whole island.

Is an eSIM cheaper than AT&T's Day Pass in Ireland?

For any trip of more than a day, usually yes. AT&T's International Day Pass costs $12 a day for one line ($84 for a week), while our Europe eSIM costs $11.99 for 7 days with 1.5 GB a day. Your AT&T number stays on for calls and texts.
