Yes. Any recent US phone works in Portugal. Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile all roam on Portuguese networks, so you have a signal as soon as you land in Lisbon, Porto or Faro. What changes is the price: Verizon and AT&T charge $12 a day per line, so a week in Portugal adds $84 per phone, and T-Mobile's included data is a few gigabytes for the whole trip.

If your phone is unlocked, a travel eSIM gives you data at a fixed price, from $11.99 for 7 days with 1.5 GB a day, while your US number stays on for calls, texts and bank codes.

What each carrier charges in Portugal

Carrier What you get in Portugal What it costs
Verizon TravelPass: your plan's talk, text and data, with 5 GB of high-speed data per 24-hour session, then 3G speeds $12 a day per line. Unlimited Ultimate includes some international data each month
AT&T International Day Pass: your plan's talk, text and data $12 a day for the first line, $6 for each extra line, at most 10 days charged per bill period. Unlimited Elite 2.0 includes 20 GB a month
T-Mobile Included roaming on most plans: 5 GB of high-speed data on Experience More, 15 GB on Experience Beyond, then slow data No extra cost, or a pass for more data. Essentials has no data abroad without a pass

On Verizon and AT&T the day pass switches itself on: one call, one sent text or one background app sync in Portugal starts a day. What triggers it and how to avoid a surprise is in our guides to Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile. On Mint, Visible, Cricket, Google Fi and other carriers the rules differ a lot: will my phone work in Europe? links to each.

What a trip costs

One phone Two phones
Verizon TravelPass, 7 days $84 $168
AT&T International Day Pass, 7 days $84 $126
AT&T International Day Pass, 10 days $120 $180
Europe eSIM, 7 days, 1.5 GB a day $11.99 $23.98
Europe eSIM, 15 days, 1.5 GB a day $19.99 $39.98

T-Mobile's included data is the cheapest if it is enough for you. Five gigabytes covers maps, messages and some photos, but not much streaming or video calling over a week or more. In that case the eSIM is about more data at full speed, not about saving money.

Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve

Lisbon and Porto have strong 4G and 5G coverage. Trams, metro and the hills of Alfama or Ribeira are easier with a map app that works in the street, and ride-hailing apps are widely used in both cities.

The Algarve is road-trip country. Coverage is good in Faro, Lagos, Albufeira and along the main coastal road, but it can drop on quiet stretches inland and on the far west coast, as it does on any network. Download offline maps of the region before you leave Wi-Fi, and save your accommodation's address offline.

Lisbon to Porto by train takes about three hours. Coverage is good for most of the line, with short gaps in cuttings and tunnels.

The Azores and Madeira

The Azores and Madeira are part of Portugal, and the Portuguese networks cover their main towns, such as Funchal and Ponta Delgada. We cannot confirm our partner coverage on every island, so if your trip is mainly in the Azores or Madeira, write to us at support@esimlounge.com before you buy and we will check for your islands. In the mountains and on remote coastal roads, signal is patchy on any network.

Portugal and Spain on one eSIM

Many trips combine Lisbon or the Algarve with Seville or Madrid. Our Portugal plans are the Europe plans: one eSIM for 30 countries, including Spain, France, Italy and the UK, so crossing the border changes nothing. Check the 11 November general strike before you book trains or flights for that week.

Working remotely from Portugal

Lisbon is a favorite with remote workers, and so is Web Summit, which runs from 9 to 12 November 2026 at Parque das Nações (our Web Summit guide covers the venue and the airport metro). If you take video calls or hotspot a laptop, the daily 1.5 GB will feel tight. Our unlimited Europe plans cost $19.99 for 7 days and $29.99 for 15 days; a fair-use policy applies, and the plan details say how.

Will my phone itself work there?

For data, yes, on any phone from the last eight years or so. Portuguese networks run 4G and 5G on frequencies US phones support.

Calls go over 4G (VoLTE), and on some older phones calls can fail while data works. If that happens, use Wi-Fi calling, free to US numbers on Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile (turn it on before you leave the US), or WhatsApp, which hotels, guesthouses and tour operators in Portugal use widely.

To use a travel eSIM, your phone must be unlocked. Check it in 30 seconds: is my phone unlocked? and does my phone support eSIM?

Before you fly

  1. Decide: carrier pass, included roaming, or a travel eSIM for data.
  2. Turn on Wi-Fi Calling while you are still in the US.
  3. Install your eSIM at home on Wi-Fi: iPhone or Android. When you land, set it as your data line and turn data roaming off on your US line, so the day pass never starts.
  4. Pack a plug adapter. Portugal uses type C and type F plugs at 230 volts. Phone chargers rated 100 to 240 V need an adapter, not a converter.
  5. Know the emergency number: 112.

FAQ

Can I use my US phone in Portugal?

Yes. Any recent US phone works on Portuguese networks through your carrier's roaming. Verizon and AT&T charge $12 a day per line, and T-Mobile's Experience plans include a few gigabytes of data. An unlocked phone can also take a travel eSIM for data at a fixed price.

Do I need an eSIM for Portugal?

No, but it is usually cheaper. A week of Verizon TravelPass or AT&T's International Day Pass costs $84 per phone. A Europe eSIM costs $11.99 for 7 days with 1.5 GB a day, and your US number keeps working for calls and texts.

Does Verizon work in Portugal?

Yes. With TravelPass you use your plan's talk, text and data in Portugal for $12 a day per line, with 5 GB of high-speed data per 24-hour session. The pass starts the first time your phone uses the network that day.

Will my phone work in the Azores and Madeira?

Yes. Both are part of Portugal and your US carrier roams there as on the mainland. For a travel eSIM, we cannot confirm our partner coverage on every island, so write to support@esimlounge.com before you buy if your trip is mainly on the islands.

Is an eSIM cheaper than AT&T's Day Pass in Portugal?

For any trip of more than a day, usually yes. AT&T's International Day Pass costs $12 a day for one line, $84 for a week, while our Europe eSIM costs $11.99 for 7 days with 1.5 GB a day. Your AT&T number stays on for calls and texts.
