Which plan fits a Portugal trip
Plans for Portugal are regional Europe plans. One eSIM covers Portugal and 29 other countries, and your data allowance is shared across all of them, so a trip that crosses into Spain needs no second install. The plan cards above show what is available:
- Daily data suits city breaks, beach stays and road trips with steady use every day.
- Unlimited suits heavy users and remote work. A fair-use policy applies; the plan details say how.
- A one-day plan covers a stopover or a single day.

Coverage across Portugal
Coverage is strong in Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve and along the main roads and rail lines. Madeira and the Azores are part of Portugal and are served by Portuguese networks. Signal is thinner in the mountains of the north, such as Peneda-Gerês, in the emptier parts of the Alentejo and the interior, and on some remote beaches and coastal paths. Download offline maps before a road trip or a hike.
Working remotely from Portugal
Lisbon, Porto and Madeira are popular with remote workers. For a long stay with daily video calls, an unlimited plan is the simplest choice; check its fair-use terms, and keep a café or coworking Wi-Fi as a backup for large uploads.
Arriving at the airport
Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi a day or two before you fly. When you land at Lisbon, Porto, Faro or Funchal, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line only and keep it off on your usual SIM. You can then check the metro or bus into town, book a taxi or ride-hailing car, or message your host from the arrivals hall.
How much data do you need?
Most visitors use about 1 GB a day for maps, messaging, photos and ride-hailing. Video calls, streaming and sharing your connection with a laptop push that up quickly.
eSIM or roaming?
If your phone plan is from an EU country, roaming in Portugal is generally charged at home rates for normal use, so you may not need a travel eSIM at all. Travelers from the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, Brazil and most of Asia usually pay their carrier's roaming fees: see travel eSIM vs international roaming.
Networks in Portugal
Portugal's main mobile networks are MEO, NOS and Vodafone, and Digi launched as a fourth in 2024. A travel eSIM connects to one of them as a roaming partner, which is why data roaming must be on for the eSIM line. The partner network can differ from plan to plan, so check the plan details, or ask us at support@esimlounge.com before you buy.
How to install your eSIM
Install it at home before you fly, then switch it on when you land.
Check your phone
Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier unlocked. Most phones from the last few years do.
Scan the QR code
Scan the code from your email while you still have Wi-Fi at home. It takes about two minutes.
Switch on when you land
Turn on the eSIM line and data roaming for it. Keep your usual SIM for calls and texts if you like.
Portugal eSIM questions
Does the eSIM work in Madeira and the Azores?
Yes. Both are part of Portugal and are served by Portuguese networks, so a plan that covers Portugal works there. Coverage is good in the towns and can be thinner in the mountains and on remote hiking trails.
Can I use the same eSIM in Spain?
Yes. The Europe plan covers 30 countries, including Spain, France, Italy and the United Kingdom, with one install. Your phone joins a local partner network when you cross the border.
Is it good enough for remote work?
For email, messaging and video calls, an unlimited plan usually is. Check its fair-use terms in the plan details, and keep a fixed Wi-Fi connection as a backup for large uploads.
Will I keep my phone number?
Yes. Your usual SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts, and the eSIM carries your mobile data. Keep data roaming off on your usual SIM to avoid roaming fees.
When does the plan start counting days?
On most plans the days start when the eSIM first connects to a network in a covered country, not when you install it. The plan details say how yours works.
