Cricket Wireless international roaming (2026): Mexico, Canada and the rest of the world

Cricket Wireless works abroad on its two top plans. Smart Unlimited and Supreme Unlimited (and Cricket's 3-month and 12-month Multi-Month plans) include talk, text and data in Mexico and Canada at no extra cost. Outside those two countries, the same plans can add Cricket Passport: $10 a day for unlimited talk, text and data, or $25 for 5 GB over 5 days, in the destinations on Cricket's list. Select Unlimited and Sensible 10GB include no roaming at all.

For Mexico or Canada on Smart or Supreme, Cricket is usually enough. For Japan and other countries Cricket Passport does not cover, for anyone on Select or Sensible, or for a trip where you need hotspot or fast data every day, a travel eSIM for data alongside your Cricket line is the answer, as long as your phone is unlocked.

A week in Europe? Unlimited Daily comes to $70. Our 7-day unlimited Europe plan costs $19.99, and the 5-day one $14.99, less than the $25 5GB for 5 Days pass.

What each Cricket plan includes abroad

Plan Monthly price (with AutoPay / without) Mexico and Canada Rest of the world
Supreme Unlimited $55 / $60 Included: talk, text and data Cricket Passport, paid add-on
Smart Unlimited $45 / $50 Included: talk, text and data Cricket Passport, paid add-on
Select Unlimited $35 / $40 Not included Not available
Sensible 10GB $30 / $35 Not included Not available

Those are the prices on Cricket's plans page on 11 October 2026, taxes included. The lower figure needs AutoPay; the higher one is the price Cricket's Broadband Facts label gives without it. Cricket's Multi-Month Unlimited plans ($120 for 3 months or $300 for 12 months of service) also include Mexico and Canada and can add Cricket Passport.

On Select Unlimited, Cricket's fine print says "International roaming is not included but add-on options may be available", while the plan's feature list says usage in Mexico and Canada is unavailable. If you are on Select, ask Cricket what your line can do abroad before you go, and plan on it not working.

Cricket runs on AT&T: what that means abroad

Cricket is AT&T's prepaid brand and uses AT&T's network at home. Abroad, that connection helps less than you might think:

  • AT&T's travel deals do not apply. AT&T's International Day Pass and the 20 GB a month included in 210+ destinations on Unlimited Elite 2.0 are AT&T plan features. Cricket has its own, smaller offer, Cricket Passport, with its own country list. (For AT&T's side, see our AT&T international roaming guide.)
  • In Mexico, AT&T Mexico is the partner network. Cricket says its coverage in Mexico is provided by AT&T Mexico (iUSACell) and Telcel, and that on networks other than AT&T Mexico your data "may be reduced to 2G speeds". In cities you will usually be on AT&T Mexico; on the road and in smaller places, slow data is a real possibility.
  • In Canada, you roam on the big three. Cricket lists Rogers, TELUS and Bell Mobility as its Canadian partners.

Does Cricket work in Mexico?

Yes, on Smart Unlimited, Supreme Unlimited and the Multi-Month plans. Cricket's plans page says "Unlimited talk, text and data to and from Canada and Mexico is included" on Smart and Supreme, and its fine print adds that "International data roaming may be reduced to 2G speeds". Your phone should find a Mexican network on its own when you arrive; Cricket's coverage page says to restart it, or switch Airplane Mode on and off, if it does not after you cross the border.

On Select Unlimited and Sensible 10GB, Mexico is not included. Select still gives you unlimited calls and texts to Mexican and Canadian numbers from the US, which is calling from home, not roaming: it does nothing for using your phone in Mexico.

For how the other big US carriers handle Mexico, see will my phone work in Mexico?

Does Cricket work in Canada?

Yes, on the same plans and terms as Mexico, with one extra rule. Cricket says calls, texts and data used in Canada must stay under 50% of your total usage over a 3-month period, "or you risk service being suspended". Primary use must be in the US. A week or two of travel is fine; spending the winter in Canada on a Cricket line is not what it is for.

Everywhere else: Cricket Passport

Cricket Passport is an add-on for lines on Smart Unlimited or higher. It needs a plan that includes Mexico and Canada roaming, a saved payment method, an account in good standing and not on BridgePay. Tablets, laptops and watches are excluded. You can sign up before you leave, or wait for the text Cricket says it sends when you arrive in a Passport country.

Option Price What you get
Unlimited Daily $10 a day per line Unlimited talk, text and data for 24 hours. Renews by itself for each 24-hour period you use it. At most 10 daily charges in a continuous 30-day period abroad
5GB for 5 Days $25 per line 5 GB of data plus talk and text for 5 consecutive days. Does not renew; talk and text stay on for the 5 days after the data runs out

How it works, from Cricket's own pages:

  • What starts a charge. Making or receiving a call, sending a text, or using data, background app data included, in a Passport country. Receiving texts, calling Cricket's customer care and using its website or app do not. Use in Mexico or Canada never triggers Passport.
  • Calls and texts are unlimited within the country you are in and back to the US.
  • No hotspot. Mobile hotspot is not included on either option.
  • Speeds depend on the local partner and "may be slowed to as little as 2G".
  • No refunds for a partly used day or pass.
  • The long-stay credit. If Unlimited Daily is active for 10 consecutive days in a 30-day period, Cricket says you get up to 20 more days at no extra cost. That is where the 10-charge cap comes from.

Where it works. Cricket says 50+ countries and territories; its list on 11 October 2026 has 85 entries, among them most of Western Europe, the UK, Iceland, Turkey, Israel, the UAE, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, India, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Costa Rica and much of the Caribbean. Several popular destinations are not on it, including Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, Hungary, Romania, Belize and Cuba. Cricket says countries will be added through 2026 and that the list may change without notice, so check every country of your trip on Cricket's Passport country list before you go.

What happens without Passport

Cricket's pages give no pay-as-you-go roaming rate outside Mexico and Canada. If your plan cannot take Passport (Select, Sensible), or your destination is not on the list, plan on your Cricket line having no service there, apart from Wi-Fi.

What a trip costs with Cricket

Cricket's own numbers, for one line:

  • One week in Mexico or Canada on Smart or Supreme: $0 extra.
  • A long weekend in Europe: the 5GB for 5 Days pass, $25, if 5 GB is enough.
  • One week in Europe on Unlimited Daily, used every day: 7 x $10 = $70.
  • Two weeks to a month in one stretch on Unlimited Daily: the 10-charge cap stops the bill at $100 within a continuous 30-day period abroad.
  • Two travelers pay for each line.

To be fair to Cricket: for a month in a Passport country, $100 for unlimited talk, text and data on your own number is a reasonable deal, as long as 2G fallback and no hotspot are acceptable.

When a travel eSIM is the better buy

A travel eSIM is a second, data-only line on your phone, bought for one country or region and sized for the trip. Your Cricket number stays on the phone. It is the answer when:

  • Your destination is not on the Passport list. Japan is the big one for US travelers: Cricket has no roaming there at all. See will my phone work in Japan? and our Japan eSIM page.
  • You are on Select Unlimited or Sensible 10GB, which have no roaming anywhere, Mexico and Canada included.
  • Your trip is a week or less outside North America. As of 11 October 2026, a 7-day unlimited Europe eSIM on our Europe page costs less than a week of Unlimited Daily, and a 5-day unlimited one costs less than the 5GB for 5 Days pass.
  • You need hotspot. Neither Passport option includes it. Check the hotspot terms of the eSIM plan you pick.
  • You want to avoid 2G. In Mexico away from AT&T Mexico, and wherever a Passport partner slows you down, an eSIM on a local network can be the faster option.

Cricket is the better choice when you are on Smart or Supreme and going to Mexico or Canada, when you will spend most of a month in one Passport country and want your number on unlimited everything, or when you need lots of calls on your US number.

Your phone must be unlocked

A travel eSIM only works on a phone that takes an eSIM and is not locked to Cricket. Cricket's unlock policy, revised on 1 July 2026:

  • Phones bought on or after 1 July 2026 can be unlocked after 365 days of paid service on that phone.
  • Phones bought before 1 July 2026 can be unlocked after six months of paid service.
  • The phone must not be reported lost or stolen or tied to a fraudulent account.
  • Unlocking is not automatic. You request it: online for an iPhone, through the myCricket app or Cricket's Device Unlock app on most Android phones.

There is no travel exception, only one for deployed military members. If your Cricket phone is still locked, a travel eSIM will not work on it, so check before you buy: does my phone support eSIM? takes 30 seconds.

Setting it up: Cricket for your number, an eSIM for data

  1. Check that your phone takes an eSIM and is unlocked: the 30-second check.
  2. Install the travel eSIM at home, on Wi-Fi: iPhone or Android.
  3. When you land, set the eSIM as the line for cellular data and turn on data roaming for the eSIM line.
  4. On your Cricket line, turn data roaming off, and on iPhone turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching, so the phone never moves data back to Cricket. Not sure what that switch does? See what is data roaming?
  5. Remember that in a Passport country, a call made or answered, or a text sent, on your Cricket line starts a $10 day if Passport is on. To avoid any charge, remove Passport or turn the Cricket line off and use WhatsApp, iMessage or FaceTime over the eSIM's data.

In Mexico or Canada on Smart or Supreme, you can keep the Cricket line fully on and use the eSIM only if you want faster data: see our Mexico eSIM page. The general trade-offs are in travel eSIM vs international roaming.

FAQ

Does Cricket Wireless have international roaming?

Yes, on Smart Unlimited, Supreme Unlimited and the Multi-Month plans. Mexico and Canada are included; in 85 other destinations on Cricket's list you add Cricket Passport, at $10 a day for unlimited talk, text and data or $25 for 5 GB over 5 days, as of 11 October 2026. Select Unlimited and Sensible 10GB have no roaming.

Does Cricket work in Mexico?

Yes, on Smart Unlimited, Supreme Unlimited and the Multi-Month plans, with talk, text and data included. Cricket warns that data on networks other than AT&T Mexico may be reduced to 2G speeds. Select Unlimited and Sensible 10GB do not include Mexico.

Does Cricket work in Canada?

Yes, on the same plans as Mexico. Your use in Canada must stay under 50% of your total usage over three months, or Cricket may suspend your service.

How much is Cricket Passport?

$10 a day per line for Unlimited Daily, charged only on days you use it and at most 10 times in a continuous 30-day period abroad, or $25 per line for 5 GB over 5 days. Hotspot is not included. You need Smart Unlimited or a higher plan.

Does Cricket work in Japan?

Not as of 11 October 2026. Japan is not on Cricket Passport's country list, and Cricket gives no pay-as-you-go roaming rate there. A travel eSIM on an unlocked phone is the way to get data in Japan.

Is Cricket's International Calling the same as roaming?

No. Cricket's International Calling add-ons, from $10 a month, are for calling other countries from the US. Using your phone abroad is roaming: included in Mexico and Canada on Smart and Supreme, and Cricket Passport elsewhere.

Can I use a travel eSIM with Cricket?

Yes, if your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. Cricket unlocks phones bought since 1 July 2026 after 365 days of paid service, and earlier phones after six months, on request. Keep Cricket for your number and set the travel eSIM as the data line.
