Yes, and on most US unlimited plans, Canada costs nothing extra. Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile all treat Canada almost like home on their current unlimited plans: your phone connects to Rogers, Bell or TELUS when you cross the border, and you keep calling, texting and using data.
The catches are on cheaper plans and prepaid brands, which often leave Canada out or charge by the day, and on data limits, which on some plans drop you to very slow speeds after a few gigabytes. Here is what each carrier includes, the border-roaming trap, and when a travel eSIM is actually worth it.
What each US carrier includes in Canada
| Carrier and plan | In Canada |
|---|---|
| Verizon Unlimited Ultimate, Unlimited Plus, Unlimited Welcome | Talk, text and data included |
| Verizon other plans | TravelPass at $6 a day per line |
| AT&T current unlimited plans (Value, Extra, Premium, Elite 2.0) | Unlimited talk, text and data included |
| AT&T other plans | International Day Pass |
| T-Mobile Experience Beyond | Calls and texts included, up to 30 GB of high-speed data, then up to 256 kbps |
| T-Mobile Experience More | Calls and texts included, up to 15 GB of high-speed data, then up to 256 kbps |
| T-Mobile Essentials | Data at up to 128 kbps only |
| Mint Mobile, every plan | Unlimited talk and text, 3 GB of high-speed data a month |
| Visible+ and Visible+ Pro | Talk, text and 2 GB of high-speed data a day included |
| Visible (base plan) | Global Pass at $5 a day |
| Cricket Smart and Supreme Unlimited | Talk, text and data included, speeds may drop to 2G |
| Cricket Select Unlimited, Sensible | Not included |
| Google Fi Unlimited Standard and Premium | Data, calls and texts included, from your monthly allowance |
| Google Fi Flexible / Unlimited Essentials | $10 per GB / does not work in Canada |
| Boost Mobile | 5 GB a month with North America Connect ($10 a month, included on Unlimited Premium) |
Each row comes from our carrier guides, which have the details and the fine print: Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Mint Mobile, Visible, Cricket, Google Fi and Boost Mobile.
It is meant for trips. Most carriers can limit or cut service if most of your use is in Canada over a couple of months. Cricket puts it at half your usage over three months. A week in Montreal or a ski trip to Whistler is fine; a winter in Canada on a US line is not what these plans are for.
The border-roaming catch
Near the border, your phone can connect to a Canadian network while you are still in the US, and stay on it for a while after you come back. Around Niagara Falls, Detroit and Windsor, Seattle and Vancouver, or the lakes of upstate New York and Vermont, this happens all the time.
- On a plan that includes Canada, it does not matter: you pay nothing either way.
- On a plan that charges for Canada, a few minutes on a Canadian tower can start a day pass, and a cruise along the St. Lawrence or a drive near the border can start several.
If your plan charges for Canada, turn off data roaming on your US line when you are near the border, and check your bill after the trip.
When a travel eSIM is worth it in Canada
If your plan includes Canada with enough data, you do not need anything else. A travel eSIM is worth it when:
- Your plan charges by the day. Verizon's other plans pay $6 a day, Visible's base plan $5 a day, AT&T's other plans a Day Pass.
- Your plan leaves Canada out or slows it down. T-Mobile Essentials gets 128 kbps, too slow for maps; Cricket Select and Google Fi Essentials get nothing.
- Your data runs out. Mint's 3 GB a month or Boost's 5 GB go fast on a road trip with maps, photos and a hotspot for the car.
- You want full speed. Some plans roam at reduced speeds, and Cricket warns of 2G.
Our Canada eSIM runs on Canadian networks at full speed: $13.99 for 7 days with 1.5 GB a day, $23.99 for 15 days, or $27.99 for 7 days unlimited. Your US line stays on for calls and texts. See the plans on our Canada eSIM page.
Coverage in Canada
Coverage is good in the cities and along the main highways, and that is where most of Canada's population lives, within a few hours of the US border. It gets thin fast away from them: on mountain roads in the Rockies, between towns in the Prairies and the Maritimes, in national parks and in the north.
- Download offline maps before a road trip, especially through the Rockies between Banff and Jasper, or around Lake Superior.
- Do not count on a signal on remote trails or ski backcountry. Tell someone your plans.
Before you go
- Check your plan in your carrier's app: whether Canada is included, how much data, and at what speed.
- If it is not included, decide between your carrier's day pass and a travel eSIM. Check your phone is unlocked first: how to check.
- Install a travel eSIM at home on Wi-Fi if you use one: iPhone or Android.
- Bring your passport. A passport book works for every way of entering Canada; a passport card works only by land or sea.

FAQ
Will my US phone work in Canada?
Yes. Every US carrier roams on Canadian networks, and most unlimited plans from Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile include Canada at no extra cost. Cheaper plans and some prepaid brands charge by the day or leave it out.
Does Verizon work in Canada?
Yes. Talk, text and data in Canada are included on Unlimited Ultimate, Unlimited Plus and Unlimited Welcome. On other Verizon plans, TravelPass costs $6 a day per line in Canada.
Does T-Mobile charge for Canada?
Not on its Experience plans: calls and texts are included, with up to 30 GB of high-speed data on Experience Beyond and 15 GB on Experience More, then slow data. On Essentials, data in Canada is limited to 128 kbps.
Do I need an international plan for Canada?
Not on most unlimited plans from the big carriers, Mint, Visible+, Cricket's top plans or Google Fi Standard and Premium. You do on Verizon's and AT&T's non-unlimited plans, Visible's base plan, Cricket Select and Google Fi Essentials.
Why was I charged for Canada when I never crossed the border?
Near the border, phones often connect to a Canadian tower from the US side. On a plan that charges for Canada, that can start a day pass. Turn off data roaming on your US line near the border if your plan does not include Canada.
Is an eSIM worth it for Canada?
Only if your plan does not include Canada, slows it down, or runs out of data. A 7-day Canada eSIM costs $13.99 for 1.5 GB a day at full speed.
