Google Fi is one of the few US carriers that works abroad without a travel pass. On Unlimited Premium and Flexible, your phone connects to a partner network in 200+ destinations as soon as you land, with free texts and calls at 20¢ a minute. Unlimited Premium includes 50 GB of high-speed data abroad, then 256 kbps. Flexible charges the same $10 per GB abroad as at home. Unlimited Standard works only in Canada and Mexico, and Unlimited Essentials does not work outside the US at all.
So for most trips on Unlimited Premium or Flexible, Fi is enough, and you do not need anything else. A travel eSIM earns its place when your plan does not cover the trip, when you are heading somewhere Fi does not list, or when you use more data than Flexible's slow-down point.
On Unlimited Standard or Essentials, with no data abroad? Two weeks in Japan with 1.5 GB a day costs $17.99 with us, without changing your Fi plan. On Flexible, the data for the same trip can reach $60.
What each Google Fi plan includes abroad
| Plan | Price, 1 line | Canada and Mexico | Other destinations (200+) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unlimited Premium | $65 a month | Data, calls and texts included | 50 GB of high-speed data, then 256 kbps. Free texts, calls 20¢ a minute |
| Flexible | $20 a month plus $10 per GB | Data, calls and texts included (data at $10 per GB) | Data at $10 per GB, as at home. Free texts, calls 20¢ a minute |
| Unlimited Standard | $50 a month | Data, calls and texts included | No cellular service. Wi-Fi calling only |
| Unlimited Essentials | $35 a month | Not supported | Not supported: no data, calls or texts outside the US |
Those are Google Fi's list prices for one line, before taxes and government fees, which Fi says are normally 10 to 20 percent. Lines are cheaper per person in a group, and Fi was running a 50% off offer for people bringing a Pixel, ending 31 October 2026.
A few rules apply to every plan:
- High-speed data is counted per person per month. Fi slows data to 256 kbps once you pass your plan's allowance: 15 GB on Flexible, 30 GB on Unlimited Essentials, 50 GB on Unlimited Standard and 100 GB on Unlimited Premium. Abroad, Unlimited Premium's high-speed allowance is 50 GB.
- You can buy speed back. After the slow-down, Fi sells full-speed data at $10 per GB for the rest of the billing cycle, from the Google Fi app.
- Video is managed on the unlimited plans. Fi says it streams video at up to 480p on Unlimited Essentials, Standard and Premium. On Flexible, the app decides.
- Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands count as home. Fi's standard US rates apply there.
How Fi roaming works: no passes, no daily fees
Fi has no day pass or travel add-on. On Unlimited Premium or Flexible, turn data roaming on in your phone's settings, and the phone connects to a local partner network when you arrive. You do not have to switch on international coverage before each trip.
Fi says 5G is available in more than 110 destinations on compatible phones. On a Pixel 7 or newer, Fi can move between several networks in one country to find the stronger signal, and its help center says this works best on an eSIM with no other active SIM. If you also add a travel eSIM, keep that in mind (more below).
There are two conditions before you go:
- Activate and use Fi in the US first. Fi's terms require at least one day of use in the US (territories do not count) before you use it abroad. You cannot activate Fi for the first time while you are already overseas. That applies to every new phone, eSIM or physical SIM.
- Be on the right plan. If you are on Unlimited Essentials or Standard, Fi lets you switch to Unlimited Premium and the change applies immediately. Other plan switches take effect at the start of your next billing cycle, so switching back down after the trip waits until then.
Is Google Fi international roaming limited in days?
There is no daily cap and no limit on the number of trips, but Fi is built for travel, not for living abroad. Its help center says that an extended period outside the US, typically 50 days, triggers a warning by email and in the app. If you stay, your international data is suspended 30 days after that email; calls and texts keep working. Returning to the US and using data for at least a week after the first warning avoids the suspension. Once suspended, international data comes back only after you use significant data in the US for at least 30 days. Fi's terms put it more broadly: if most of your usage over 90 consecutive days is outside the US, international data is suspended.
For a sabbatical, a long work posting or a winter abroad, plan on a local SIM or a travel eSIM for at least part of the stay.
Does Google Fi work in Mexico and Canada?
Yes, on three of the four plans. Unlimited Standard, Unlimited Premium and Flexible all include data, calls and texts within the US, Canada and Mexico. On Standard and Premium, data in Mexico and Canada is part of your monthly allowance; on Flexible it is billed at $10 per GB like anywhere else.
Unlimited Essentials does not work in Mexico or Canada. If that is your plan, switch to Standard or Premium before the trip, or use a travel eSIM for data. For how the other US carriers handle Mexico, see will my phone work in Mexico?
Calls and texts abroad
On Unlimited Premium and Flexible, in Fi's 200+ destinations:
- Texts are free, to the US and to other countries.
- Calls over the cellular network cost 20¢ a minute.
- Wi-Fi calls to the US, Canada and Mexico are free. Wi-Fi calls to other countries are charged at Fi's per-country rates, and only outgoing calls are charged.
On Unlimited Standard you can call and text over the cellular network in Canada and Mexico only. Elsewhere, Fi says you would need a local SIM for cellular service, though Wi-Fi calling still works. Fi also notes Wi-Fi calling may be unavailable on a phone not designed for Google Fi.
Hotspot and data-only SIMs abroad
Hotspot. You can share your connection with up to 10 devices. Unlimited Premium includes 50 GB of high-speed hotspot use and Unlimited Standard 25 GB; on Flexible, hotspot data is billed like any other data; Unlimited Essentials has no hotspot. Fi counts hotspot data toward your monthly high-speed data, abroad as at home.
Data-only SIMs. On Unlimited Premium and Flexible, you can add a free data-only SIM (eSIM or card) to a cellular tablet or laptop, up to four per line, and Fi says they work in more than 200 countries and regions. Their data counts toward your own monthly allowance, the device must be unlocked, and hotspot is not supported on a data-only SIM. Unlimited Standard and Essentials cannot add one.
That makes a data-only SIM handy for your own iPad, but it is not a line for a travel companion: their usage eats into your allowance. A companion on another carrier is better off with their own plan or a travel eSIM.
What a two-week trip costs on Google Fi
Take one person spending 14 days in Japan or Europe and using about 1 GB a day, 14 GB in all:
- Unlimited Premium: nothing extra. 14 GB is well inside the 50 GB of high-speed data abroad. Your only extra cost is calls at 20¢ a minute.
- Flexible: data costs $10 per GB, but Bill Protection caps it. For a single line, Fi stops charging for data once you reach 6 GB in a cycle, so your data cost tops out at $60 and the bill at $80 before taxes. Past 15 GB in the cycle, speeds drop to 256 kbps unless you pay $10 per GB for full speed. If your trip spans two billing cycles, each cycle is counted on its own.
- Unlimited Standard or Essentials: no data at all outside Canada and Mexico (or anywhere abroad, on Essentials). Your options are a switch to Unlimited Premium, which is $15 a month more than Standard for one line at list prices and stays in place until your next cycle, or a travel eSIM for the data.
The group thresholds for Bill Protection are higher (10 GB for two people, 12 GB for three, and so on), and Fi's plans page lists them all.
When a travel eSIM is better than Fi
Be honest about it: if you are on Unlimited Premium and your destination is on Fi's list, a travel eSIM adds little. It helps when:
- Your plan does not roam. On Unlimited Essentials, or on Standard outside Canada and Mexico, a travel eSIM for the trip can cost less than a month of Premium, and you do not have to change plans.
- You use a lot of data on Flexible. Past 15 GB in a cycle you are on 256 kbps, which is enough for messages but slow for maps, ride-hailing and photo backups. A plan sized for the trip, or an unlimited one, keeps full speed.
- Your destination is not on Fi's list. As of 11 October 2026, Fi's international rates page does not list Cuba, Kuwait, Lebanon, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Bhutan or Ethiopia, among others. Fi says you would need a local SIM there for cellular service. Check every country of your trip on Fi's international rates page.
- You are away for more than about seven weeks. Fi's 50-day warning and the suspension that follows make a long stay the one case where Fi's roaming stops being an option.
- Someone traveling with you needs data. A data-only SIM shares your allowance and cannot run a hotspot, so a companion on another carrier, or on Essentials, is often better served by their own travel eSIM.
- You want full-resolution video on the road. The unlimited plans manage video at up to 480p.

Setting it up: Fi for your number, an eSIM for data
You can keep Fi for calls and texts and let a travel eSIM carry your data.
- Check your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked: the 30-second check.
- Install the travel eSIM at home, on Wi-Fi: iPhone or Android.
- When you land, set the eSIM as the line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for the eSIM.
- On your Fi line, turn data roaming off so Fi never carries your data (and on Flexible, never bills it). On iPhone, also turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching.
- Keep Wi-Fi calling on for your Fi number: on Wi-Fi, calls to the US, Canada and Mexico are free. Away from Wi-Fi, WhatsApp, FaceTime or Google Meet over the eSIM's data avoid Fi's 20¢ a minute.
On a Pixel 7 or newer, Fi says its network switching works best on an eSIM with no other active SIM. With a travel eSIM active, Fi's line may not switch networks as smoothly; for calls and texts that rarely matters, and the eSIM handles the data. To understand what the data roaming switch actually does on each line, see what is data roaming?
How Fi compares with other US carriers
Fi's model, data abroad at no extra charge on its top plan, is close to T-Mobile's: see our T-Mobile international roaming guide. Carriers that sell roaming by the day or by the pass work differently: Visible, Mint Mobile, AT&T and Verizon.
FAQ
Does Google Fi work internationally?
Yes, on Unlimited Premium and Flexible, in more than 200 destinations, with no pass to buy. Unlimited Premium includes 50 GB of high-speed data abroad, then 256 kbps; Flexible charges $10 per GB as at home. Unlimited Standard works in Canada and Mexico only, and Unlimited Essentials only in the US, as of 11 October 2026.
Is Google Fi international data free?
On Unlimited Premium it is included in the plan, up to 50 GB of high-speed data abroad, then 256 kbps. On Flexible you pay the same $10 per GB as in the US, with Bill Protection capping what you pay for data in a cycle. Unlimited Standard includes data in Canada and Mexico only.
How fast is Google Fi data abroad?
Fi says it offers high-speed data in its covered destinations, with 5G in more than 110 of them on compatible phones, subject to the local network. Once you pass your plan's high-speed allowance, data slows to 256 kbps until the next cycle, unless you buy full speed back at $10 per GB.
Do I need to turn on international roaming with Google Fi?
Only data roaming in your phone's settings. There is no pass or add-on: on Unlimited Premium and Flexible the phone connects to a partner network when you land. You must have activated and used Fi in the US for at least a day before your first trip.
Does Google Fi work in Mexico?
Yes, on Unlimited Standard, Unlimited Premium and Flexible, which include data, calls and texts in Mexico and Canada. Unlimited Essentials does not work in Mexico.
How long can I use Google Fi abroad?
There is no fixed limit per trip, but Fi's help center says about 50 days outside the US triggers a warning, and international data is suspended 30 days after it unless you come back and use Fi in the US. Calls and texts keep working.
Can I use a travel eSIM with Google Fi?
Yes, if your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. Keep Fi for your number, set the travel eSIM as your data line and turn off data roaming on Fi. On a Pixel 7 or newer, Fi says its network switching works best with no other active SIM, which matters less when the eSIM carries your data.
