For most trips, the best eSIM for Italy is a plan with about 1.5 GB a day that also covers the rest of Europe. eSIM Lounge's plan is a Europe plan for 30 countries and gives 10.5 GB over a week for $11.99, against $17.00 for Airalo's Italy-only 10 GB plan. We compared what five providers charge for a week and for two weeks, and what their unlimited plans give you at full speed.
The short answer
- A week in Rome, Florence and Venice: a daily plan of 1.5 GB a day, $11.99 for 7 days.
- Two weeks, or Italy with France or Switzerland: the same plan for 15 days gives 22.5 GB for $19.99, and it keeps working across the border.
- Remote work, streaming or a laptop on your hotspot: unlimited, $19.99 for 7 days or $29.99 for 15, with full speed for the first 5 GB each day.
- A month or longer: 1.5 GB a day for 30 days, $26.99.
- From the US? Your carrier will charge you. AT&T and Verizon charge $12 a day abroad unless you are on their top plans, so a week on a day pass costs $84.
Italy-only plan or Europe plan?
eSIM Lounge does not sell an Italy-only plan: every plan for Italy here is its Europe plan, which covers Italy and 29 other countries, Switzerland and the UK included, on one install. Most competitor plans for Italy work in Italy alone, and their Europe plans are sold separately. So the fair comparison has two parts: what an Italy-only trip costs with each provider, below, and what it costs to carry on across the border, further down.

eSIM Lounge prices in the table are always current. Competitor prices are for their Italy-only plans, checked on 29 October 2026, on Holafly's own site and, for the others, on esimDB, before any discount code. They change often: the plan cards on our Italy eSIM page always show our current prices.
Which to pick:
- A week of steady use: eSIM Lounge's 1.5 GB a day plan gives 10.5 GB for $11.99, against Airalo ($17.00), Nomad ($18.50) and Saily ($20.99) for 10 GB. If 5 GB covers the week, Airalo's 5 GB plan is $10.00.
- Two weeks: eSIM Lounge's 15 day plan gives 22.5 GB for $19.99. If 10 GB is enough for the whole trip, Airalo's 10 GB for 15 days is $18.00.
- A week of unlimited: eSIM Lounge charges $19.99, against $23.00 at Airalo, $23.90 at Holafly and $25.00 at Nomad, and its plan keeps full speed for 5 GB a day, like Airalo's Italy plan and more than Nomad's 2 GB. For five days or less, compare Saily's 5 day plan at $18.99.
- Two weeks of unlimited: eSIM Lounge charges $29.99, and Nomad's Italy unlimited stops at 10 days. If you need more than 5 GB a day at full speed, Holafly publishes no daily limit, at $44.50.
Italy and its neighbors on one eSIM
eSIM Lounge's plan already covers France, Switzerland, Austria, Greece, Spain, the UK and the rest of the 30 countries on the Europe list, at the same price. With the others, carrying on across the border means buying their Europe plan instead of their Italy plan. A week of Europe-wide unlimited costs $27.00 with Airalo and $28.99 with Saily, against $19.99 for eSIM Lounge's Europe plan.
The Europe plan leaves out Monaco, Norway, Iceland, Turkey and the Balkan countries outside the EU, such as Albania and Montenegro. For those, the Global 170 plan covers all of them. See eSIM for multiple countries for when one plan beats two.
What "unlimited" really gives you
Every unlimited plan slows down after a certain amount of data each day. That threshold matters more than the headline price if you work online or stream:
- eSIM Lounge: full speed for the first 5 GB each day, then slower until the next day.
- Airalo: its Italy plan gives 5 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps; some of its other Italy plans give 3 GB.
- Saily: 5 GB a day, then 1 Mbps.
- Nomad: 2 GB a day, then 1 Mbps.
- Holafly: no daily threshold published, but speeds can be cut under its fair-use policy, and hotspot sharing is capped at 1 GB a day.
1 Mbps is enough for messaging and maps, not for video calls. See fixed, daily or unlimited for how each plan type behaves.
eSIM or roaming from the US
Your US phone will most likely work in Italy: will my phone work in Italy? has each carrier's rules there, and will my phone work in Europe? covers the rest of the trip. The cost is the question:
- AT&T charges $12 a day with its International Day Pass, at most 10 daily fees per line per bill: AT&T international roaming.
- Verizon charges for TravelPass by the day on most plans: Verizon international roaming.
- T-Mobile includes some data abroad on most plans, with a set amount at high speed before it slows right down: T-Mobile international roaming.
A travel eSIM keeps your US number on for calls and texts while it carries your data, so you pay once for the trip instead of by the day.
Before you go: strikes and the border
- Strikes: Italian transport strikes are announced in advance. Check the Italy strike calendar and your operator before you book a train or a flight. With data on your phone, you can follow the operators' updates and rebook on the go.
- Entering Italy: passports are now registered at Schengen borders under the EES. Entering Europe in 2026 explains what it means for Americans and where ETIAS stands.
Coverage: cities, coast and trains
Italy's networks are TIM, Vodafone, WindTre and Iliad, and a travel eSIM roams on one of them.
- Rome, Milan, Florence, Venice, Naples and Bologna: strong coverage, and along the main roads and high-speed rail lines between them.
- The Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre: the towns are covered, but cliffs block the signal in places on the coast road and the footpaths between villages.
- Trains: short drops in tunnels, for example on the high-speed line between Florence and Bologna. Frecciarossa and Italo trains have onboard Wi-Fi as a backup.
- The Dolomites, Sicily and Sardinia: cities and resorts are well covered; deep valleys, high trails and the islands' interiors have gaps.
Setting it up
- Check your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked: the 30-second check.
- Install the eSIM on Wi-Fi on the day you leave, before you set off for the airport: iPhone or Android. Installing it earlier can start the plan early.
- When you land, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line only and keep it off on your US SIM. Our arrival guides cover Rome Fiumicino and Milan Malpensa.
FAQ
What is the best eSIM for Italy?
For most trips, a daily plan of 1.5 GB a day that also covers the rest of Europe. eSIM Lounge charges $11.99 for a week and $19.99 for two, and its plan keeps working in France, Switzerland and 27 other countries. The table above sets it beside the Italy-only plans from Airalo, Holafly, Nomad and Saily. For streaming or remote work, pick an unlimited plan by how much it gives at full speed each day: eSIM Lounge's unlimited plan gives 5 GB.
Do I need an eSIM for Italy?
If you are from the US, usually yes, unless your plan includes Europe. AT&T and Verizon charge $12 a day on most plans. If your phone plan is from an EU country, roaming in Italy is generally charged at home rates for normal use, so you may not need one.
How much data do I need for a week in Italy?
About 1 GB a day for maps, train and museum bookings, messaging and photos, so 7 to 10 GB for a week. Video calls, streaming and sharing your connection with a laptop use much more.
Can I use one eSIM for Italy and Switzerland?
Yes, with a Europe plan. Switzerland is outside the EU but on eSIM Lounge's Europe plan's list of 30 countries. Most Italy-only plans from other providers stop working at the Swiss border.
Does an eSIM work in Vatican City?
Vatican City is not on the country list of any plan eSIM Lounge sells. It sits inside Rome, so your phone may well stay on an Italian network there, but we cannot promise it. If the eSIM drops, choose an Italian network by hand in your phone's settings.
Will I keep my US phone number?
Yes. Your US SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts, and the eSIM carries your data. Keep data roaming off on your US line to avoid your carrier's daily fees.
