Which versions of the iPhone 11 Pro Max have no eSIM

Versions with two nano-SIM slots, sold in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao, have no eSIM. Everywhere else the iPhone 11 Pro Max has a nano-SIM slot and an eSIM.

What to know about the iPhone 11 Pro Max

One eSIM line plus the SIM card. Apple lists the iPhone 11 Pro Max as Dual SIM (nano-SIM and eSIM). It can store several eSIMs, but two lines run at once only as the nano-SIM plus one eSIM: two active eSIMs need an iPhone 13 or later (Apple Support). For a trip that is the classic setup: your home SIM card stays in the tray for calls and texts, and the travel eSIM carries your data. Only one line uses cellular data at a time.

Check yours. Open Settings > General > About and scroll down: an iPhone with eSIM lists an EID there (Apple Support). No EID means a version without eSIM.

Locked or not. Apple notes that eSIM may be disabled on an iPhone bought from some carriers, so make sure yours is unlocked first: the 30-second check. Then install a travel eSIM on iPhone.

Check your own iPhone 11 Pro Max

Two minutes on the phone itself settles it, whichever version you have.

  1. Dial *#06#

Open the phone app and dial *#06#. If a number labelled EID appears, your phone supports eSIM.

  2. On an iPhone

Go to Settings, then Cellular (or Mobile Data). If you see Add eSIM or Add Cellular Plan, it supports eSIM.

  3. Check it is unlocked

A phone bought from a carrier on contract may be locked to it. Ask your carrier, or look for a Carrier Lock line in your settings that says No SIM restrictions.
