Arriving in Vietnam

Wi-Fi, SIM counters and getting online at the main airports.

Which plan fits a Vietnam trip

Vietnam is covered by our regional plans rather than a Vietnam-only plan. The Asia Pacific plan covers Vietnam and 17 other destinations, including Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia and Singapore, with one install, and the global plans cover it too. That suits the many Vietnam trips that start or end in a neighbouring country. Your data allowance is shared across every country on the plan's list, so check the list and the allowance on the plan cards above before you buy.

Coverage from north to south

Coverage is strong in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue and Nha Trang, and along the main road and rail routes between them. It thins out in the mountains of the far north, around Sapa and on the Ha Giang loop, in parts of the Mekong Delta away from the towns, and out on the water in Ha Long Bay. Download offline maps before a motorbike trip or a cruise, and save bus, train and hotel confirmations to your phone.

Arriving at the airport

Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi a day or two before you fly. When you land at Hanoi Noi Bai, Ho Chi Minh City Tan Son Nhat or Da Nang, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line only and keep it off on your usual SIM. You can then book a Grab into town or message your hotel straight away, instead of queuing at a SIM counter after a long flight.

How much data do you need?

A typical traveler using maps, ride-hailing, messaging and photos uses about 1 GB a day. Video calls, streaming and sharing your connection with a laptop push that up quickly. Check how a plan's allowance is set (per day or for the whole trip) on its card.

Getting around online

Ride-hailing apps such as Grab are widely used in Vietnamese cities, and they make airport and city journeys easier to agree on before you set off. Messaging apps cope better with a weak signal than calls, which helps in the mountains and on boats.

Networks in Vietnam

Vietnam's main mobile networks are Viettel, VinaPhone and MobiFone. A travel eSIM connects to one of them as a roaming partner, which is why data roaming must be on for the eSIM line. The partner network can differ from plan to plan, so check the plan details, or ask us at support@esimlounge.com before you buy.

How to install your eSIM

Install it at home before you fly, then switch it on when you land.

  1. Check your phone

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier unlocked. Most phones from the last few years do.

  2. Scan the QR code

Scan the code from your email while you still have Wi-Fi at home. It takes about two minutes.

  3. Switch on when you land

Turn on the eSIM line and data roaming for it. Keep your usual SIM for calls and texts if you like.

Vietnam eSIM questions

Is there a Vietnam-only plan?

Not at the moment. Vietnam is covered by the Asia Pacific plan and the global plans, which also work in the neighbouring countries on their lists.

Will one eSIM cover Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand?

Yes, with the Asia Pacific plan, which covers all three as well as Laos, Malaysia, Singapore and others. Your allowance is shared across every country on its list.

Does the eSIM work in Sapa, Ha Giang and Ha Long Bay?

Mostly, in the towns. Coverage thins on mountain roads and out on the water, so download offline maps and save your bookings before you go.

Will I keep my phone number?

Yes. Your usual SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts, and the eSIM carries your mobile data. Keep data roaming off on your usual SIM to avoid roaming fees.

Does the eSIM come with a Vietnamese phone number?

No. The plans are data only. If you need a local number, a tourist SIM from a shop or the airport gives you one.
