Which UAE plan fits your trip
The UAE plans on the cards above come in these shapes:
- Daily data suits steady use: maps, ride-hailing, messaging and photos every day.
- Unlimited suits heavy users, business trips with a laptop and remote work. A fair-use policy applies; the plan details say how.
- A one-day plan covers a stopover in Dubai or Abu Dhabi between flights.
The global plans also cover the UAE, which helps on a trip that continues to other countries. See fixed, daily or unlimited for how each type behaves.
Coverage across the Emirates
Coverage is strong across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the other cities, including the Dubai Metro, the malls and the main highways between the emirates. It is thinner in the open desert and in the Hajar Mountains, so download offline maps before a desert safari, a drive to Hatta or a trip into the mountains.
App calls: check before you rely on them
Voice and video calls over some internet apps have long been restricted in the UAE, while messaging in the same apps works. The list of allowed apps has changed over time, so check the current rules before counting on app calls, and use your usual SIM for an important phone call. These rules apply on every network in the country, travel eSIMs included. Our eSIM for Dubai and the UAE guide covers this in more detail.
Arriving at the airport
Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi a day or two before you fly. When you land at Dubai International (DXB), Dubai World Central (DWC), Abu Dhabi (AUH) or Sharjah, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line only and keep it off on your usual SIM. You can then book a taxi or ride-hailing car, check the Metro or message your hotel from the arrivals hall.
How much data do you need?
A typical visitor using maps, ride-hailing, messaging and photos uses around 1 GB a day. Business travelers who share their connection with a laptop, and anyone making video calls or streaming, use much more: an unlimited plan is the simpler choice for them.
Conferences and trade shows
Dubai and Abu Dhabi host large events through the year. During a big show, networks around the exhibition centers carry heavy traffic. Install your eSIM before you fly, keep data spare for sharing a connection with a laptop, and carry a power bank.
Networks in United Arab Emirates
The UAE has two main mobile operators: e& (formerly Etisalat) and du. Both cover Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the main highways well. A travel eSIM connects to one of them as a roaming partner, which is why data roaming must be on for the eSIM line. The partner network can differ from plan to plan, so check the plan details, or ask us at support@esimlounge.com before you buy.
How to install your eSIM
Install it at home before you fly, then switch it on when you land.
Check your phone
Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier unlocked. Most phones from the last few years do.
Scan the QR code
Scan the code from your email while you still have Wi-Fi at home. It takes about two minutes.
Switch on when you land
Turn on the eSIM line and data roaming for it. Keep your usual SIM for calls and texts if you like.
United Arab Emirates eSIM questions
Which eSIM is best for Dubai?
For a week of maps, taxis, messaging and photos, a daily plan of 1.5 GB a day suits most visitors. Business travelers sharing a connection with a laptop are better off with an unlimited plan, and the one-day plan covers a stopover. Every plan on this page works across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.
Do WhatsApp calls work with a UAE eSIM?
WhatsApp messaging works. Voice and video calls on WhatsApp and some other apps have historically been blocked in the UAE, on every network. The rules have changed over time, so check the current situation before you rely on app calls.
Does the eSIM work in Oman, for example on a trip to Musandam?
A UAE plan works in the UAE only. Oman is covered by the Global (170 countries) plans, so pick one of those for a trip that crosses the border.
Is there a plan for a stopover in Dubai?
Yes. The one-day plan suits a layover or a single day in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Check the plan cards above for what is on sale.
Does the eSIM come with a UAE phone number?
No. The plans are data only. Hotels, restaurants and tour operators usually accept your own number or a messaging app.
Will I keep my phone number?
Yes. Your usual SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts, and the eSIM carries your mobile data. Keep data roaming off on your usual SIM to avoid roaming fees.
