The UAE is one of the most connected places you can visit, and also one where home roaming can be expensive. A travel eSIM gets you on a local network from the moment you land at DXB or AUH, for a fixed price paid up front.
The local networks
The UAE has two main mobile operators: e& (formerly Etisalat) and du. Both cover Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the main highways well, including the metro and the malls. Travel eSIMs connect to one of them as a partner network. Coverage in the open desert is thinner on both, so download offline maps before a desert trip.
App calls: check before you rely on them
Voice and video calls over some internet apps have long been restricted in the UAE. WhatsApp voice and video calls, for example, have historically not worked there, while WhatsApp messaging does. The list of allowed apps has changed over time, so:
- Do not count on app calls for anything important without checking the current rules first.
- Messaging, maps, email, browsing and ride-hailing apps work normally.
- For important calls, your usual SIM can make normal phone calls at your home carrier's roaming rate.
A travel eSIM does not change these rules: they apply to every network in the country.
Business trips and conferences
Dubai hosts large events such as GITEX, Arab Health and Gulfood. During those weeks, networks around the exhibition centers carry very heavy traffic. A few habits help:
- Install your eSIM before you fly, not at the venue.
- Keep a little extra data in your plan for hotspotting a laptop if the venue Wi-Fi struggles.
- Carry a power bank: maps, badges and messaging all day drain a phone fast.
In December 2026 the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix (4 to 6 December) runs straight into GITEX Global in Dubai (7 to 11 December): our guide to both events covers the venues and getting around.
Setup before you fly
- Check your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked: the 30-second check.
- Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi: iPhone or Android.
- When you land, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line only, and keep it off on your home SIM.
How much data?
A typical visitor using maps, ride-hailing, messaging and photos uses around 1 GB a day. If you will hotspot a laptop or make video calls, go bigger, or see which plan type fits.
