Which plan fits a Greece trip

There is no Greece-only plan here. Every plan on this page is a bundle: the Europe plan covers Greece and 29 other countries, and the Global 75 and Global 170 plans reach further. Your data allowance is shared across every country on the list, so one eSIM, installed once, covers the whole trip. Pick by trip:

  • A week in Athens and one island: the 7 day Europe plan with 1.5 GB a day covers maps, ferry and taxi apps, messaging and photos. Take the 7 day unlimited plan if you make video calls or work from the beach bar.
  • Two weeks of island hopping: the 15 day Europe plan, daily or unlimited. The daily allowance resets every day, which suits long days of maps and ferry times.
  • Greece and Italy, by ferry or by plane: the Europe plan. Ferries from Patras and Igoumenitsa to Bari, Brindisi, Ancona and Venice land you in a country on the same list.
  • Greece and Cyprus: the Europe plan. Cyprus is on its list.
  • Greece and Turkey, or Corfu and Albania: the Global 75 plan. Turkey and Albania are not on the Europe list, but Global 75 covers Greece, Turkey and Albania together, so a day trip from Kos to Bodrum or from Corfu to Sarandë keeps working.
  • A month or longer, off season: the 30 day Europe plan with 1.5 GB a day. Unlimited plans run up to 15 days.

On the daily plans, speed drops sharply once the day's 1.5 GB is used and comes back when the allowance resets. See fixed, daily or unlimited for how each type behaves.

Island hopping: ferries and your phone

Most visitors spend part of the trip on ferries, from Piraeus or Rafina near Athens to the Cyclades, or between Crete, Rhodes and the Dodecanese. Your phone is your ticket, your timetable and your map, so:

  • Download your ferry tickets to the phone before you leave the hotel. The signal often drops in the middle of a crossing, and a QR code in an email you cannot open will not get you on board.
  • Check your sailing on the day. Strong summer winds, the meltemi, can delay or cancel smaller and faster boats, especially in July and August, and seamen's strikes are announced a few days ahead. Ferry companies text or email changes, so keep your data on.
  • Do not count on ferry Wi-Fi. Where a ship has it, it is often slow or paid. Your eSIM keeps working near the coast and in port.
  • Save offline maps of each island: rental scooters, beach roads and village alleys are where you will need them.

Coverage across Greece

Greece's networks cover the cities, the ports and the main resort towns well. Where it changes:

  • Athens and Thessaloniki: strong across both cities.
  • The Cyclades (Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Milos): good in the towns and ports, weaker on remote beaches and on the far side of hills.
  • Crete: good in Heraklion, Chania and the north coast resorts. Gorges and mountain villages, such as the Samaria Gorge, have long stretches without signal.
  • The Dodecanese and the north Aegean (Rhodes, Kos, Samos, Lesbos): good in towns, with the Turkish network close by (see below).
  • The Ionian islands (Corfu, Zakynthos, Kefalonia): good in the towns and resorts, thinner on mountain roads.
  • The mainland mountains, such as Meteora, Zagori and the Pelion: villages are covered, trails often are not.

Before a hike, a drive into the mountains or a long crossing, download what you need and tell someone your plans.

Near Turkey and Albania

Several Greek islands sit a few miles from Turkey: Kos from Bodrum, Rhodes from Marmaris, Samos from Kuşadası, Chios from Çeşme and Lesbos from Ayvalık. Corfu faces Albania across a narrow strait. There, your phone can join a Turkish or Albanian network while you are still in Greece.

  • On the Europe plan, data stops working on those networks. Choose a Greek network by hand in your phone's settings (on iPhone, Settings, then Cellular, then your eSIM, then Network Selection), and it comes back.
  • On the Global 75 plan, it keeps working on either side, and a day trip across costs nothing extra.

Arriving in Greece

Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi a day or two before you fly. When you land, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line only and keep it off on your usual SIM. You can then check the metro or bus into Athens, book a taxi or a ferry and message your hotel from the arrivals hall. Our Athens airport guide covers the free Wi-Fi and where to buy a SIM after arrivals.

How much data do you need?

Most visitors use about 1 GB a day for maps, ferry and taxi apps, messaging and photos. Uploading lots of video from the beach, video calls and sharing your connection with a laptop push that up quickly. For a long stay with remote work, look at the unlimited plans.

eSIM or roaming?

Most US carriers charge a daily fee for each day you use your phone in Greece, or limit what is included: see will my phone work in Europe? and our guides to AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. Travelers from Canada, the UK and Australia usually pay roaming fees too. If your phone plan is from an EU country, roaming in Greece is generally charged at home rates for normal use, so you may not need a travel eSIM at all. More in travel eSIM vs international roaming.

Before you go

  • Entering Greece: Greece is in the Schengen area, where passports are now registered under the EES. Read Entering Europe in 2026.
  • On a cruise: a Greek islands cruise uses the ship's own network at sea, at a high price. See cruise phone plans, and use the eSIM in port.
  • Several countries in one trip: eSIM for Europe explains how a multi-country plan works and which countries are on the list.

Networks in Greece

Greece's main mobile networks are Cosmote, Vodafone and Nova. A travel eSIM connects to one of them as a roaming partner, which is why data roaming must be on for the eSIM line. The partner network can differ from plan to plan, so check the plan details, or ask us at support@esimlounge.com before you buy.

How to install your eSIM

Install it at home before you fly, then switch it on when you land.

  1. Check your phone

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier unlocked. Most phones from the last few years do.

  2. Scan the QR code

Scan the code from your email while you still have Wi-Fi at home. It takes about two minutes.

  3. Switch on when you land

Turn on the eSIM line and data roaming for it. Keep your usual SIM for calls and texts if you like.

Greece eSIM questions

What is the best eSIM for Greece?

It depends on your trip. For a week of maps, ferries and photos, a daily plan with 1.5 GB a day is enough for most people. If you stream, make video calls or share your connection, take unlimited. If your trip also takes in Italy or Cyprus, the Europe plan covers them; if it takes in Turkey or Albania, the Global 75 plan does.

Does the eSIM work on the Greek islands?

Yes. The islands are served by Greek networks, and coverage is good in the towns, ports and resorts. Expect weak spots on remote beaches, in gorges and on hiking trails.

Does the eSIM work on Greek ferries?

Near the coast and in port, yes. In the middle of a long crossing the signal often drops on any network, so download your ferry tickets and offline maps before you board.

Can I use one eSIM for Greece and Turkey?

Yes, with the Global 75 plan, which covers Greece, Turkey and Albania. The Europe plan does not cover Turkey, so on islands close to the Turkish coast choose a Greek network by hand if the data stops.

Does it cover Cyprus?

Yes. Cyprus is one of the 30 countries on the Europe plan, along with Italy, Croatia and Bulgaria.

Will my US phone work in Greece?

Most recent US phones work on Greek networks. To use a travel eSIM, the phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked: how to check. Your US SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts while the eSIM carries your data, so keep data roaming off on your US line to avoid your carrier's daily fees.

Will I keep my phone number?

Yes. Your usual SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts, and the eSIM carries your mobile data. Keep data roaming off on your usual SIM to avoid roaming fees.

When does the plan start counting days?

On most plans the days start when the eSIM first connects to a network in a covered country, not when you install it. The plan details say how yours works.
