Free Wi-Fi at CTS

The free network is NewChitose_Airport_Free_Wi-Fi, run by NTT Broadband Platform. It covers the Domestic Terminal and the International Terminal.

  • Select the network, then accept NTT Broadband Platform's terms of use to connect. The airport's page mentions no password and lists no time limit.
  • The connection is not encrypted, so the airport suggests a VPN for anything sensitive.
  • If it will not connect, check that your phone gets its IP and DNS addresses automatically, as the airport advises.
  • The airport's own pages disagree on the connecting facility between the two terminals: the Wi-Fi page includes it, the FAQ leaves it out. Get what you need before you walk across.

Buying a SIM card after arrivals

Both terminals have pocket Wi-Fi counters and prepaid SIM vending machines on the public side, on the same floor as their arrival lobby.

International Terminal (arrival lobby on 2F)

  • 2F: XCom Global (Imoto WiFi), 9:00 to 19:00; Telecom Square's Mobile Center, 9:00 to 17:00; and VISION's Global Wi-Fi, staffed 9:00 to 19:00, with locker pick-up 7:00 to 18:30. All three rent pocket Wi-Fi and phones, take same-day applications and sell SIM cards.
  • 3F: AnyFone JAPAN, for picking up and returning a pocket Wi-Fi, open with the terminal.
  • Prepaid SIM vending machines on 2F and 3F sell Japan-only SIMs from Journey SIM and AnyFone Japan, from a few days with a fixed amount of data to 31 days unlimited, some also as eSIM.

Domestic Terminal (arrival lobby on 1F)

  • 1F: XCom Global (Imoto WiFi), 9:00 to 18:00, closed 13:00 to 14:00, with the same services as in the International Terminal. Telecom Square's WiFiBOX and AnyFone JAPAN hand over and take back pocket Wi-Fi routers, open with the terminal.
  • A prepaid SIM vending machine on 1F sells Japan SIMs of 5 to 31 days unlimited and 61 days with 90 GB, plus Asia, world and North America or Europe SIMs.

The airport publishes no prices and says to check them at the machine. The staffed international counters close by 19:00, so on a late arrival only the machines and the AnyFone pick-up remain. Hours as listed on the airport's site, checked October 2026.

Or skip the counters: an eSIM installed at home connects as you land, with nothing to collect or return. See eSIM vs pocket Wi-Fi in Japan.

eSIM plans for Japan

Install one at home before you fly and you are online when the wheels touch down, with no queue at a SIM counter.

Mobile networks in Japan

Japan has four mobile networks: NTT Docomo, KDDI (au), SoftBank and Rakuten Mobile. A travel eSIM connects to one of them as a roaming partner, which is why data roaming must be on for the eSIM line. All four cover the cities and the main rail lines well; differences show up in the mountains, on the smaller islands and in rural Hokkaido. Japan has closed every 3G network, so phones now connect over 4G or 5G. The partner network can differ from plan to plan, so check the plan details, or ask us at support@esimlounge.com before you buy.

Tips for staying connected

  • Install before you fly, switch on when you land. Check that your phone supports eSIM, add the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi (iPhone, Android), then turn on data roaming for the eSIM line once you are off the plane.
  • Check your home plan first. Many US plans charge by the day in Japan: see our guides to Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Mint Mobile roaming. UK and Australian networks set their own Japan rates, so check yours before you go.
  • Charge up. Free charging spaces with sockets and USB ports are on 1F, 2F and 3F of both terminals and of the connecting corridor. CHARGESPOT battery rentals (paid, through its app) stand in the international 2F arrival lobby near the escalator and in the domestic 1F arrival lobby beside Lawson, near arrival gate 4.
  • Changing terminals. The international and domestic terminals are linked by a connecting facility with a moving walkway: the airport puts it at about a 10-minute walk from the domestic 2F Center Plaza to the international 2F arrival lobby.
  • Get online before the train. JR New Chitose Airport Station is on B1F, under the terminal. Between 9:00 and 16:00 six Airport trains an hour run to Sapporo: Special Rapid from 33 minutes, Rapid 37, Semi-Rapid 43. Tap Suica, Kitaca or another Japanese IC card at the gate, but IC cards do not work beyond Otaru (JR Hokkaido).
  • Check your flight status in winter. The airport points travelers to the airlines' own sites and to Hokkaido Travel Safety Information.
  • Before you fly: Visit Japan Web. Japan's Digital Agency runs Visit Japan Web for arrival procedures (immigration and customs) and the tax-free shopping service. Use the official service only. From 1 November 2026, tax-free shopping is a refund claimed at departure: how the new refund works.

New Chitose Airport questions

Is there free Wi-Fi at New Chitose Airport?

Yes. Connect to NewChitose_Airport_Free_Wi-Fi and accept the terms of use of NTT Broadband Platform, which runs it. It covers the Domestic and International Terminals. It is not encrypted, so use a VPN for anything sensitive.

Where can I rent a pocket Wi-Fi at New Chitose Airport?

In the International Terminal, XCom Global (Imoto WiFi), Telecom Square's Mobile Center and VISION's Global Wi-Fi have counters on 2F, the arrival lobby floor, open from 9:00 and closing between 17:00 and 19:00. AnyFone JAPAN hands over routers on 3F. In the Domestic Terminal, XCom Global, WiFiBOX and AnyFone JAPAN are on 1F.

Can I buy a SIM card at New Chitose Airport after I land?

Yes. Prepaid SIM vending machines are on 2F and 3F of the International Terminal and on 1F of the Domestic Terminal, and the staffed rental counters in the International Terminal sell SIM cards too. The airport does not publish prices: check them at the machine.

Does the free Wi-Fi work between the domestic and international terminals?

Do not count on it. The airport's Wi-Fi page includes the connecting path, but its FAQ says the Wi-Fi works in both terminal buildings excluding the connecting facilities. Load what you need before you walk across.

Should I install my eSIM before flying to Sapporo?

Yes. Install it at home on Wi-Fi, then turn on data roaming for the eSIM line when you land. You are online at immigration, before the Wi-Fi login or the rental counters, and on the train to Sapporo. Follow our guide for iPhone or Android.
