Free Wi-Fi at NRT

The free network is FreeWiFi-NARITA. It covers every terminal and the shuttle buses between them.

  • Select the network, then accept the terms of use on the screen that opens.
  • No registration and no security setup are needed.
  • The connection is not encrypted, so the airport suggests a VPN for anything sensitive.

Buying a SIM card after arrivals

All SIM and rental counters are on the public side, before departure passport control, so you can reach them after customs.

  • Terminal 1, Central Building 1F: SoftBank Global Rental, J WiFi & Mobile, AnyFone JAPAN, XCom Global and Telecomsquare (07:00 to 21:00), plus a GPA SIM card vending machine.
  • Terminal 1, North and South Wings 1F: JAL ABC (06:30 until one hour after the last international arrival). The South Wing also has a GPA SIM card vending machine.
  • Terminal 1, Central Building 4F: Rakuten Mobile sells SIM cards (08:00 to 20:00).
  • Terminal 2, 1F: J WiFi & Mobile, SoftBank Global Rental and AnyFone JAPAN (07:00 to 21:00), JAL ABC (06:30 until one hour after the last international arrival) and GPA SIM card vending machines. More GPA machines stand on 2F before customs.
  • Terminal 3, 1F: J WiFi & Mobile (07:00 to 21:00) and a GPA SIM card vending machine.

Most staffed counters rent pocket Wi-Fi and phones; the GPA machines and Rakuten Mobile sell SIM cards. JAL ABC's most recent published list priced an unlimited 7-day prepaid SIM at 4,500 yen (a list valid to March 2025, read October 2026), so check the price at the counter.

eSIM plans for Japan

Install one at home before you fly and you are online when the wheels touch down, with no queue at a SIM counter.

Mobile networks in Japan

Japan has four mobile networks: NTT Docomo, KDDI (au), SoftBank and Rakuten Mobile. A travel eSIM connects to one of them as a roaming partner, which is why data roaming must be on for the eSIM line. All four cover the cities and the main rail lines well; differences show up in the mountains, on the smaller islands and in rural Hokkaido. Japan has closed every 3G network, so phones now connect over 4G or 5G. The partner network can differ from plan to plan, so check the plan details, or ask us at support@esimlounge.com before you buy.
