eSIM plans for Japan

Install one at home before you fly and you are online when the wheels touch down, with no queue at a SIM counter.

Mobile networks in Japan

Japan has four mobile networks: NTT Docomo, KDDI (au), SoftBank and Rakuten Mobile. A travel eSIM connects to one of them as a roaming partner, which is why data roaming must be on for the eSIM line. All four cover the cities and the main rail lines well; differences show up in the mountains, on the smaller islands and in rural Hokkaido. Japan has closed every 3G network, so phones now connect over 4G or 5G. The partner network can differ from plan to plan, so check the plan details, or ask us at support@esimlounge.com before you buy.

Tips for staying connected

  • Same-day router rentals depend on stock, so reserve ahead if you need one.
  • The Wi-Fi does not cover some parts of the international arrivals route in Terminal 1, so you may get no signal until you reach the arrival hall.
