The best eSIM for Austria keeps you online from Vienna, Salzburg or Innsbruck to the ski slopes of Tyrol, and keeps working when the train goes on to Munich, Prague, Budapest or Venice. Every plan here is a Europe or Global eSIM with daily or unlimited data, installed at home before you fly. Your usual number stays on for calls and texts.

Which plan fits an Austria trip
There is no Austria-only plan here. Every plan on this page is a bundle: the Europe plan covers Austria and 29 other countries, and the Global 75 and Global 170 plans reach further. Your data allowance is shared across every country on the list, so one eSIM, installed once, covers the whole trip. Pick by trip:
- A week in Vienna and Salzburg: the 7 day Europe plan with 1.5 GB a day covers maps, trains, concert and museum tickets, messaging and photos. Take the 7 day unlimited plan if you make video calls or work from a coffee house.
- A ski week in Tyrol or Salzburgerland: the 7 day Europe plan, daily or unlimited. If you fly into Munich, the same eSIM works in Germany on the way to the resort.
- Vienna with Prague, Budapest or Bratislava: the Europe plan covers the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia, so the classic Central Europe rail trip runs on one eSIM.
- The Alps by train, from Innsbruck to Zurich, Munich or Venice: the Europe plan covers Switzerland, Germany and Italy too.
- A month or longer: the 30 day Europe plan with 1.5 GB a day. Unlimited plans run up to 15 days.
On the daily plans, speed drops sharply once the day's 1.5 GB is used and comes back when the allowance resets. See fixed, daily or unlimited for how each type behaves.
Getting around Austria
Austria is easy to cross by train, and the phone carries the tickets:
- The ÖBB app sells train tickets across the country and shows live departures and platforms, including the Railjet and Nightjet trains to the neighboring countries.
- In Vienna, the WienMobil app covers the U-Bahn, trams and buses.
- Driving: Austria's motorways need a vignette, which you can buy as a digital vignette online before you drive. Mountain passes can close in winter, so check the road before you set off.
- Hallstatt and the lakes: Hallstatt is small and very busy in season. Check the train, bus or parking before you go, and keep tickets and timetables on your phone.
Skiing and the mountains
The ski resorts of Tyrol, Salzburgerland and the Arlberg, such as St. Anton, Kitzbühel, Ischgl, Sölden and Saalbach, are well covered in the villages, at the lifts and on most marked slopes. Resort apps show lift status, snow and the weather, and many ski passes can be bought or loaded online.
- Off piste, on ski tours and on high trails, the signal can drop behind ridges and in side valleys. Download offline maps and check the avalanche bulletin before you leave the marked runs.
- Save the mountain rescue number, 140, and the general emergency number, 112.
- Keep your phone warm. Cold drains batteries fast: carry it in an inside pocket and bring a power bank.
Coverage across Austria
Austria's three networks cover the cities, the main rail lines and the resorts well. Where it changes:
- Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Graz and Linz: strong across the cities.
- The Danube and the Wachau valley: good in the towns and along the river.
- The Salzkammergut lakes: good in Hallstatt, St. Wolfgang and the lake towns; thinner on mountain trails above them.
- Alpine valleys and high trails: villages are covered, the far ends of narrow valleys and high routes often are not.
- Long tunnels: some keep a signal, some do not. Download what you need before a long journey.
Near the borders
Austria borders Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Italy, Switzerland and Liechtenstein, and the Europe plan covers all eight. Near a border, your phone can switch to a foreign network without you noticing, and the eSIM keeps working on either side.
Arriving in Austria
Most visitors land at Vienna, with Salzburg and Innsbruck for the Alps, and many skiers fly into Munich and cross the border by road or rail. Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi a day or two before you fly. When you land, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line only and keep it off on your usual SIM. You can then buy a train ticket into the city in the ÖBB app before you reach the platform.
How much data do you need?
Most visitors use about 1 GB a day for maps, train apps, messaging and photos. Video calls, streaming, ski videos and sharing your connection push that up quickly. For a long stay with remote work, look at the unlimited plans.
eSIM or roaming?
Most US carriers charge a daily fee for each day you use your phone in Austria, or limit what is included: see will my phone work in Europe? and our guides to AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. Travelers from Canada, the UK and Australia usually pay roaming fees too. If your phone plan is from an EU country, roaming in Austria is generally charged at home rates for normal use. More in travel eSIM vs international roaming.
Before you go
- Entering Austria: Austria is in the Schengen area, where passports are now registered under the EES. Read Entering Europe in 2026.
- Several countries in one trip: eSIM for Europe explains how a multi-country plan works and which countries are on the list.
- Check your phone first: a travel eSIM needs an unlocked phone: how to check.
Networks in Austria
Austria's mobile networks are A1, Magenta and Drei. A travel eSIM connects to one of them as a roaming partner, which is why data roaming must be on for the eSIM line. The partner network can differ from plan to plan, so check the plan details, or ask us at support@esimlounge.com before you buy.
How to install your eSIM
Install it at home before you fly, then switch it on when you land.
Check your phone
Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier unlocked. Most phones from the last few years do.
Scan the QR code
Scan the code from your email while you still have Wi-Fi at home. It takes about two minutes.
Switch on when you land
Turn on the eSIM line and data roaming for it. Keep your usual SIM for calls and texts if you like.
Austria eSIM questions
What is the best eSIM for Austria?
It depends on your trip. For a week in Vienna or a ski week, a daily plan with 1.5 GB a day is enough for most people. If you stream, make video calls or share your connection, take unlimited. The Europe plan also covers Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Italy and Switzerland, so a trip across the border needs no second install.
Does it work on the ski slopes?
In most resorts, yes, especially in the villages, at the lifts and on marked slopes. Off piste, on ski tours and in deep valleys the signal can drop, so carry the resort's map and save the mountain rescue number, 140.
Does the same eSIM work in Germany, Switzerland and Hungary?
Yes. Austria is sold on our Europe plans, which cover 30 countries including Germany, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Hungary, so your data keeps working across the border.
Can I fly into Munich for a ski trip in Austria?
Yes. Germany is on the Europe plan too, so the eSIM works from the moment you land in Munich and all the way to the resort.
Which apps do I need for Austria?
The ÖBB app for trains, WienMobil for Vienna's public transport, and your ski resort's app for lifts and weather. All of them work over the eSIM's data.
Will my US phone work in Austria?
Most recent US phones work on Austrian networks. To use a travel eSIM, the phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked: how to check. Your US SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts while the eSIM carries your data, so keep data roaming off on your US line to avoid your carrier's daily fees.
Will I keep my phone number?
Yes. Your usual SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts, and the eSIM carries your mobile data. Keep data roaming off on your usual SIM to avoid roaming fees from home.
When does the plan start counting days?
On most plans the days start when the eSIM first connects to a network in a covered country, not when you install it. The plan details say how yours works.
