The classic Christmas market river cruise is a week on the Danube or the Rhine between late November and 23 December, when most markets close. The Danube route links Nuremberg, Regensburg or Passau with Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest; the Rhine route links Basel, Strasbourg and Cologne with Amsterdam. Pick the Danube for Vienna and Budapest, the Rhine for Strasbourg and Cologne. Either way you cross four or five countries in a week, so plan your phone data once for all of them rather than paying your carrier by the day.
The two classic routes at a glance
| Danube | Rhine | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical ports | Nuremberg or Regensburg, Passau, Linz, Melk or Krems (Wachau Valley), Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest | Basel, Breisach, Strasbourg, Mannheim or Speyer, Koblenz, Cologne, Amsterdam |
| Countries | Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary | Switzerland, France, Germany, the Netherlands |
| Big markets on the way | Nuremberg, Vienna, Budapest | Basel, Strasbourg, Cologne |
| Typical length | 8 days (7 nights) | 8 days (7 nights) |
| Our Europe eSIM covers | All four countries | All four countries |
Our Europe plan covers all eight countries above, Switzerland included, on one eSIM: $11.99 for 7 days with 1.5 GB a day, or $19.99 for 15 days, which also covers a pre-cruise night or two.
What is the best Christmas market river cruise?
The one whose markets you most want to see, sailing in the week you can travel.
- Danube if Vienna and Budapest are the draw. Vienna alone has more than a dozen markets, and the Danube sailings usually include the Wachau Valley between Melk and Krems.
- Rhine if you want Strasbourg, which calls itself the "Capitale de Noël", plus Cologne's cluster of markets and Basel, one of Switzerland's largest.
- Go early in the season. Markets are busiest on weekends, and a cruise visits each city on a fixed day, so a late November or early December sailing usually means fewer crowds.
- Mind the 23 December cliff. Many markets close on 23 or 24 December, so a sailing that reaches a city after that date can find the stalls gone. Vienna's Rathausplatz market runs to 26 December and Schönbrunn to 6 January 2027.

Uniworld warns on its site that unusually low water on parts of the Rhine, Main and Danube has forced changes to some sailings. Low water is a known risk on any river cruise: read your line's policy on swapping ships or busing between ports before you book.

What you do ashore
Most Christmas sailings include a guided walk in each city that ends at the market, then free time, with the ship moored a short walk or shuttle ride from the center. Expect:
- Mulled wine in a souvenir mug. German and Austrian markets serve hot drinks in a mug with a deposit (Pfand): hand it back for the deposit or keep it.
- Cash for the small stalls. Many take cards now, but not all. Germany, Austria, France, Slovakia and the Netherlands use euros; Hungary uses the forint and Switzerland the franc.
- Scenic sailing days. The Wachau Valley on the Danube and the Middle Rhine gorge are part of most itineraries. Signal can drop in both, as below.
Your phone on a river cruise
A river ship is never far from land, so your phone works exactly as it does on shore. On an ocean cruise, once the ship is a few miles out it switches your phone to its own satellite cell network, which AT&T and Verizon bill at about $20 a day per line (our cruise carrier guide). European river ships do not leave the land networks behind: on the Danube or the Rhine your phone joins the German, Austrian, Slovak, Hungarian, Swiss, French or Dutch network on the bank, whether you are in port or sailing.
That has three consequences:
- Your US carrier bills normal roaming for the country you are in, not a cruise rate. Verizon's TravelPass and AT&T's International Day Pass are $12 a day per line (AT&T charges $6 for each extra line), so an 8-day cruise is about $96 per phone on Verizon. T-Mobile's Experience plans include a few gigabytes abroad, then slow data. See Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile.
- A travel eSIM works the whole way, not only in port, because it uses the same land networks. That is the difference from an ocean cruise, where ours works only in port and near the coast.
- Expect short gaps. Signal can drop while the ship is inside a lock, and in deep valleys such as the Wachau or the Middle Rhine. It comes back within minutes.
Ship Wi-Fi is free on most river lines, but shared. River ships connect to the internet by satellite or by mobile data themselves, and every passenger shares that one link, so evenings, when everyone uploads photos at once, are slow. Your own data is faster and works ashore, where you need it for maps, the line's app and meeting points.
Crossing borders. On a Danube cruise you change country three times in a week, and on the Rhine you start or finish in Switzerland. Switzerland is not in the EU, and many US and UK plans treat it differently from EU countries. Our Europe plan covers all 30 of its countries on one allowance, Switzerland and the UK included, so nothing changes at the border.
Which plan fits your cruise
Prices from our catalogue on 22 October 2026, data only, in US dollars. The days on most of our plans start when the eSIM first connects to a network in a covered country, and each plan states its rule before you pay.
- 8-day cruise, no extra nights: 1.5 GB a day for 7 days, $11.99, if you sail on day one and fly home on day eight with Wi-Fi at the airport. Most people are better served by the 15-day plan below.
- Cruise plus a night or two before or after: 1.5 GB a day for 15 days, $19.99.
- You share your connection or video call home every evening: unlimited for 7 days, $19.99, or 15 days, $29.99.
Your own number stays on your US SIM for calls and texts; the eSIM carries the data. Install it at home, before you fly: iPhone or Android. Check first that your phone is unlocked.
Setup in two lines: make the eSIM your data line with data roaming on, and turn data roaming off on your US line so a day pass never starts. Leave Wi-Fi calling on if you want to call home over the ship's Wi-Fi.
FAQ
What is the best Christmas market river cruise?
The one whose ports match the markets you want. A Danube cruise is best for Vienna and Budapest, and usually includes the Wachau Valley; a Rhine cruise is best for Strasbourg, Cologne and Basel. Sail in late November or early December for smaller crowds, and avoid sailings that reach a city after 23 December, when many markets have closed.
When do Christmas market river cruises run in 2026?
From mid or late November to about 23 December 2026. AmaWaterways' Danube sailings leave on dates from 23 November to 13 December 2026, and Emerald's Danube sailings from 24 November to 16 December 2026, according to their sites on 22 October 2026.
Is the Danube or the Rhine better for a Christmas market cruise?
Neither is better: they are different. The Danube passes through Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary with Vienna and Budapest as highlights; the Rhine passes through Switzerland, France, Germany and the Netherlands with Strasbourg and Cologne. Most lines sail both in about 8 days.
Does my phone work on a river cruise?
Yes. On a European river your phone stays on land networks the whole time, so it works as it does on shore, with short gaps in locks and deep valleys. Your carrier bills normal roaming for each country, $12 a day per line on Verizon's TravelPass and AT&T's Day Pass, not a cruise rate.
Do I need an eSIM for a Christmas market river cruise?
You do not need one, but it is usually cheaper than a day pass. A Europe eSIM covering all the countries on both routes costs $19.99 for 15 days with 1.5 GB a day, against about $96 per phone for 8 days of Verizon's TravelPass. Your US number keeps working for calls and texts.
Is Wi-Fi free on river cruises?
On most European river lines, yes, but it is shared by every passenger over one satellite or mobile link, so it slows down in the evening and does not help you ashore. Use your own data for maps and meeting points in port.
Does a Europe eSIM work in Switzerland on a Rhine cruise?
Ours does. Switzerland is one of the 30 countries on our Europe plan, along with France, Germany and the Netherlands, so a Rhine cruise from Basel to Amsterdam needs one eSIM.
