Which Egypt plan fits your trip

Egypt plans come in two shapes. The plan cards above show the days and data on sale:

  • Daily data suits steady use: maps, Uber, messaging and photos every day, which is most trips.
  • Unlimited suits heavy users and remote work from a Red Sea resort. A fair-use policy applies; the plan details say how.

See fixed, daily or unlimited for how each type behaves.

Coverage in the cities, on the Nile and in the desert

Coverage is strong in Cairo and Giza, Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan, Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh and Dahab. On a Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan it comes and goes between towns. In the Western Desert, on the road to Abu Simbel and on desert safaris it can disappear for long stretches. Download offline maps and save tickets and hotel confirmations to your phone before you set off.

Arriving at the airport

Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi a day or two before you fly. When you land in Cairo, Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh or Luxor, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line only and keep it off on your usual SIM. You can then book an Uber, message your driver or your hotel straight away, without stopping at a kiosk in arrivals.

How much data do you need?

A typical traveler using maps, ride-hailing, messaging and photos uses about 1 GB a day. Video calls, streaming and sharing your connection with a laptop push that up, so remote workers are better served by an unlimited plan.

eSIM or roaming from the UK?

Egypt is outside the roaming deals that cover Europe, so UK carriers charge by the day. When we checked, Vodafone UK charged £8 a day in Egypt, and Three £8 a day for customers who joined from 18 December 2025 (£7 for those who joined earlier). Over a week that is £56 for data you can use up within a day's allowance. A travel eSIM carries your data for the whole trip at one price, and your usual SIM stays on for calls and texts. See travel eSIM vs international roaming.

How our Egypt plans compare

Start from how much data you use in a day, then compare what the whole trip costs. On unlimited plans, check how much you get at full speed each day: that is where providers differ most. Our own prices are on the plan cards above, always current.

Provider One week Two weeks What to know
eSIM Lounge 1.5 GB a day, or unlimited 1.5 GB a day for 15 days, or unlimited Prices on the plan cards above. Unlimited keeps full speed for the first 5 GB each day.
Airalo 10 GB: $31.00. Unlimited: $32.00 20 GB for 15 days: $41.00. Unlimited: $49.00 Unlimited keeps full speed for 3 GB a day, then 1 Mbps.
Holafly Unlimited: $36.50 Unlimited for 15 days: $50.50 Unlimited only. Hotspot sharing is capped at 1 GB a day, and no daily full-speed threshold is published.
Nomad Unlimited: $27.00. 10 GB for 30 days: $28.00 20 GB for 30 days: $37.00. Unlimited for 10 days: $35.00 Unlimited keeps full speed for 2 GB a day, then 1 Mbps. No 15 day unlimited plan.
Saily 10 GB for 30 days: $38.99 No Egypt plan above 10 GB No Egypt unlimited plan: the nearest is a 30 day global plan at $59.99.

Which to pick:

  • A week of steady use: our 1.5 GB a day plan gives 10.5 GB over the week. When we checked, Airalo's 7 day 10 GB plan cost $31.00, and Nomad and Saily sold 10 GB only on 30 day plans ($28.00 and $38.99).
  • Two weeks: our 15 day plan gives 22.5 GB. When we checked, the nearest was Nomad's 20 GB at $37.00, then Airalo's at $41.00.
  • A week of unlimited: when we checked, ours cost less than all four. It keeps full speed for 5 GB a day, against 3 GB on Airalo and 2 GB on Nomad. The cheapest competitor was Nomad at $27.00.
  • Two weeks of unlimited: ours again cost less than all four. Airalo ($49.00) and Holafly ($50.50) were next. Nomad stops at 10 days and Saily has no Egypt unlimited plan.

Competitor prices checked on 13 October 2026 in US dollars, on each provider's site or, where it would not load or show US dollars, on esimDB. They change often.

Networks in Egypt

Egypt has four mobile operators: Vodafone, Orange, e& (formerly Etisalat) and WE. Coverage is good in Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan and the Red Sea resorts. A travel eSIM connects to one of them as a roaming partner, which is why data roaming must be on for the eSIM line. The partner network can differ from plan to plan, so check the plan details, or ask us at support@esimlounge.com before you buy.

How to install your eSIM

Install it at home before you fly, then switch it on when you land.

  1. Check your phone

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier unlocked. Most phones from the last few years do.

  2. Scan the QR code

Scan the code from your email while you still have Wi-Fi at home. It takes about two minutes.

  3. Switch on when you land

Turn on the eSIM line and data roaming for it. Keep your usual SIM for calls and texts if you like.

Egypt eSIM questions

Which eSIM is best for Egypt?

For a week or two of maps, Uber, messaging and photos, a daily plan of 1.5 GB a day suits most travelers. For remote work from a Red Sea resort, streaming or sharing a connection with a laptop, an unlimited plan is simpler. Our picks at the top of the plans show one of each, and the comparison above sets them against Airalo, Holafly, Nomad and Saily.

Do I need to register my phone in Egypt?

Not for a normal holiday. Since 21 January 2026 Egypt charges customs duty on phones brought in from abroad, but visitors are exempt for 90 days from arrival, and phones roaming on a foreign SIM are reported to be exempt as well. A travel eSIM roams in the same way. For a stay of more than 90 days, check the current rules before you go.

Do WhatsApp calls work in Egypt?

Messaging works. Voice and video calls in WhatsApp and some other apps have been blocked on and off on Egyptian networks for years, and some were still restricted in 2025. We cannot promise app calls will work, so use your usual SIM for an important call.

Is an eSIM better than buying a SIM at Cairo airport?

For data, it is simpler: you set it up at home, skip the kiosks after landing and keep your usual SIM in the phone. A local SIM gives you an Egyptian phone number, which a travel eSIM does not. If you need a local number, buy one; for maps and messaging, the eSIM does the job.

Does it work on a Nile cruise?

In Luxor, Aswan and the towns along the river, yes. Between towns the signal comes and goes, so expect gaps on the stretches in between.

Does it work in Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh and Dahab?

Yes. Coverage is good in the Red Sea resorts and towns. It drops offshore on boat and diving trips and inland on desert excursions.

Will I keep my phone number?

Yes. Your usual SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts, and the eSIM carries your mobile data. Keep data roaming off on your usual SIM to avoid roaming fees.

When does the plan start counting days?

On most plans the days start when the eSIM first connects to a network in Egypt, not when you install it. The plan details say how yours works.
