Belong works overseas, but only with a paid travel pack. There is one pack: $30 for 3 GB of data, 150 minutes of calls and unlimited standard SMS, valid for 15 days once it starts, in more than 45 destinations including Bali, Japan, Thailand, New Zealand, the USA, Vietnam, Fiji and Singapore. Without a pack you can still receive texts and use Wi-Fi calling to Australian numbers, but you get no mobile data. For a short trip the pack is fair value. For heavier data use, a longer stay or a destination Belong does not cover, a travel eSIM for data next to your Belong number usually works out better.
Heading to Bali? Belong's pack is AUD $30 for 3 GB over 15 days. Our Indonesia plan with 1.5 GB a day for 15 days, 22.5 GB in all, costs US$20.99, and you keep your Belong number for calls and texts.
Does Belong work overseas?
Yes, on a Belong mobile plan, with a travel pack. A few conditions come first:
- Mobile plans only. Belong's data plans cannot add a travel pack, so a data-only SIM gets nothing abroad.
- Not the 1 GB plan. Belong says customers on 1 GB plans are not eligible for the basic overseas service or the paid travel packs.
- No overdue bill. The pack can only be added when nothing is owing on your account.
- No pay-as-you-go data. Belong's terms say there are no excess or pay-as-you-go charges. When the pack's 3 GB or 150 minutes run out, that feature stops until you buy another pack.
Without a pack, Belong includes a basic overseas service on eligible plans: you can receive SMS in eligible destinations, which is handy for bank and login codes, and with a VoLTE compatible phone you can call Australian numbers over Wi-Fi calling.
Belong is Telstra's online brand and runs on parts of the Telstra network at home. It sells eSIMs as well as physical SIMs.
Where the Belong travel pack works
Belong lists these destinations on its international roaming page:
| Region | Destinations |
|---|---|
| Asia | China, Hong Kong, India (excluding Bihar, Uttar Pradesh East and West Bengal), Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam |
| Oceania | Fiji, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Vanuatu |
| North America | Canada, USA |
| Europe | Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Latvia, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Türkiye, United Kingdom, plus Guernsey for calls and SMS only |
| Middle East | Israel, Qatar |
Belong says it is trialling roaming in Bulgaria, Estonia, Luxembourg and Romania, where your service may work but is not guaranteed. Some places travellers from Australia often visit are not on the list, among them Cambodia, Laos, Mexico, Poland, Samoa, the Cook Islands, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt. If your destination is not listed, Belong says you will not be able to use the service there, apart from Wi-Fi calling and receiving SMS.
The Belong travel pack: price and rules
| Pack | Price | Data | Calls | SMS | Valid |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| International Roaming travel pack | $30 | 3 GB | 150 minutes, made and received | Unlimited standard SMS | 15 days once active |
How it works, from Belong's terms and FAQs:
- Buy up to 365 days ahead. An unused pack expires 365 days after purchase. You can also buy one overseas over Wi-Fi.
- It starts when you connect abroad, on an eligible network in an included destination, not when you buy it. Belong sends an SMS and email when it starts. A layover in an included country starts it too, so keep the phone in flight mode until you arrive if you do not want that.
- 15 days, then it ends. The pack expires at midnight AEDT on the fifteenth day. Leftover data does not carry over.
- A new pack replaces the old one. Buying another pack ends the current one at once and forfeits whatever is left. There is no auto top up.
- Calls count both ways. Incoming and outgoing calls, voicemail and conditionally forwarded calls all use your 150 minutes. Premium numbers are not included.
- No refunds. Once active, the pack cannot be cancelled or refunded for a change of mind.
Belong sends usage alerts at 50%, 85% and 100% of your data and calls, though it says they can lag by up to 48 hours.
What a trip costs with Belong
10 days in Bali. One pack covers it: $30 for 3 GB, which is about 300 MB a day. That is enough for messages, a few maps and the odd ride-hailing booking. If you run out on day six, a second pack costs another $30 and replaces the first.
Two weeks in Japan. Still one pack, since 14 days fits inside 15: $30 for 3 GB. Train apps, maps and translation use data quickly, so many travellers will need a second pack, which brings it to $60.
Three weeks in Europe. Two packs, $60, for 6 GB, as long as every country on your route is on Belong's list. Poland, for example, is not.
The pack is a flat $30 per 15 days, so the per day cost is low. The limit is data: 3 GB per pack is light by travel standards.
When a travel eSIM is cheaper
Belong's pack is simple and the price is fair for a light user on a short trip. A travel eSIM tends to win when:
- You need more than 3 GB. Maps, Grab or Uber, photo backups and video calls add up. On Belong, each extra 3 GB costs another $30 and restarts the 15 days. Travel eSIMs come in larger fixed, daily and unlimited sizes.
- You are going somewhere Belong does not cover. Cambodia, Laos, Mexico, the UAE and much of Eastern Europe are not on the list.
- The trip is long. For a month away you would be buying at least two packs, and more if you use data.
- You only need data. If you call home on WhatsApp or FaceTime, you are paying for 150 minutes you will not use.
A travel eSIM needs a phone that takes an eSIM and is not locked to a carrier: check yours in 30 seconds. For how the two approaches charge you in general, see travel eSIM vs international roaming. For Bali, our Indonesia eSIM page compares the plans; for Japan, see Japan.
How to use Belong and a travel eSIM together
You do not have to give up your Belong number. Keep the Belong SIM for calls and texts, and let the eSIM carry the data.
- Install the travel eSIM at home, on Wi-Fi: iPhone or Android.
- When you land, set the eSIM as the line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for the eSIM only.
- Leave data roaming off on your Belong line, so it never tries to carry data.
- Keep Wi-Fi calling on. Belong says eligible customers with a VoLTE compatible phone can call Australian numbers over Wi-Fi without a pack, and you can still receive SMS in eligible destinations.
- If you want to make calls on your Belong number away from Wi-Fi, add the $30 pack for its 150 minutes. Otherwise, WhatsApp or FaceTime over the eSIM's data does the job.
This keeps your number reachable for codes and calls from home, and puts your data on a plan sized for the trip.

FAQ
Does Belong work overseas?
Yes, on a Belong mobile plan with a $30 travel pack: 3 GB, 150 minutes and unlimited standard SMS for 15 days, in more than 45 destinations, as of October 2026. Data plans and 1 GB plans cannot add a pack. Without one you can only receive SMS and use Wi-Fi calling.
Does Belong work in Bali?
Yes. Indonesia is on Belong's list of travel pack destinations as of October 2026, so the $30 pack gives you 3 GB, 150 minutes and unlimited SMS for 15 days in Bali. Without a pack there is no mobile data.
How much is Belong international roaming?
$30 per travel pack, as of October 2026. There is one pack: 3 GB of data, 150 minutes of calls and unlimited standard SMS, valid for 15 days from when it starts. There are no pay-as-you-go or excess charges.
Do I need to turn on roaming with Belong?
Yes, on your phone. Belong's troubleshooting guide says to turn on data roaming in your phone's settings. The pack itself starts on its own when you connect to an eligible network abroad.
Can I buy a Belong travel pack before I leave?
Yes. You can buy it up to 365 days before you travel, in your Belong account, and it only starts when you connect to an eligible network overseas. You can also buy one while abroad, over Wi-Fi.
What happens when my Belong pack runs out?
When the 3 GB or 150 minutes are used, that feature stops working, with no extra charges. Buy another $30 pack to carry on. It replaces the old one straight away, and anything left on the old pack is lost.
Does Belong roaming work in Cambodia or Mexico?
No. Neither is on Belong's list of travel pack destinations as of October 2026, and Belong says the service will not work in a destination that is not listed. A travel eSIM for that country is the simple fix.
