amaysim roaming works through prepaid packs you add in the amaysim app, and they last a long time: every pack is valid for 365 days, across as many trips as you like. There are four, from $20 (calls and texts, no data) to $70 for 9 GB with calls and texts. They work in amaysim's list of selected destinations, which covers Bali, Japan, Thailand, New Zealand, the USA, Vietnam, Fiji, Singapore and most of Europe. For someone who travels a few times a year and uses little data, the packs are good value. For a heavy data user, a long trip or a destination amaysim does not list, a travel eSIM for data alongside your amaysim number usually works out better.
Two weeks in Japan? amaysim's The Epic is AUD $70 for 9 GB. Our Japan plan with 1.5 GB a day for 15 days, 22.5 GB in all, costs US$17.99, and you keep your amaysim number for calls and texts.
How amaysim roaming works
amaysim says that to activate international roaming you add a roaming pack to your plan in the amaysim app, then make sure roaming is enabled on your phone. The pack is what you use abroad: your regular plan's data and calls are for Australia.
- 365 days to use it. A pack lasts a year from purchase, so leftovers from one trip carry into the next.
- Packs stack. Buy another pack before the first expires and your unused inclusions roll over into the new one, under the new 365 day expiry.
- Hotspot works. amaysim says personal hotspot works as usual while roaming.
- Not on ships. The packs do not work at sea. They do work in flight on airlines that use the Aeromobile service, with flight mode off.
- Calls count both ways. amaysim says voice minutes include incoming and outgoing calls.
amaysim runs on the Optus network at home, and it sells eSIMs as well as physical SIMs.
amaysim roaming packs and prices

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small Talk | $20 | None | 100 minutes | 100 | 365 days |

Premium services are excluded. You check what is left in the amaysim app, though amaysim notes usage from overseas networks can show up late.
The data has grown since the packs launched in April 2023: The Works, Just Gigs and The Epic then came with 1 GB, 5 GB and 5 GB.
Where amaysim roaming works
amaysim's page lists more than 120 selected destinations (one banner on the same page still says 90+). The list includes the main trips from Australia: Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, New Zealand, the USA, Vietnam, Fiji, Singapore, plus Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea, Cambodia, Laos, India, Sri Lanka, Canada, Mexico, the UK, the UAE and most of Europe, and Pacific islands including Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu.
If your destination is not on the list, amaysim suggests a local SIM or Wi-Fi. Check every country on your route on amaysim's roaming page before you go.
What a trip costs with amaysim
10 days in Bali. The Works ($25) gives 2 GB, about 200 MB a day: enough for messages and a little map use. Just Gigs ($50) gives 6 GB, but no calls or texts. If you want both, The Epic ($70) gives 9 GB and 100 minutes.
Two weeks in Japan. The Epic, $70 for 9 GB, is a fair fit for a traveller who uses maps and train apps every day. Anything you do not use stays for your next trip, as long as it is within 365 days.
Two trips a year. This is where amaysim shines. Buy The Epic for a week in Fiji, use 4 GB, and the other 5 GB is still there for a trip to New Zealand later in the year. Buy another pack before it expires and the leftovers roll over again.
Because the packs do not expire after a few days, there is no per day charge. You pay for data and minutes, and the price per GB falls as the pack gets bigger: $12.50 per GB on The Works, about $8.33 on Just Gigs and about $7.78 on The Epic (which also includes calls and texts).
When a travel eSIM is cheaper
amaysim's packs are some of the friendliest roaming in Australia: no daily fees and a year to use them. A travel eSIM tends to win when:
- You use a lot of data. At around $8 per GB on amaysim's biggest pack, a heavy user on a two week trip can spend more than $100. Travel eSIMs come in larger fixed, daily and unlimited sizes.
- You only travel once a year. The rollover is worth less if you will not be back abroad within 365 days.
- Your destination is not on amaysim's list. Check yours first.
- You want data and no minutes. Just Gigs is data only, but if you need more than 6 GB you are buying The Epic and paying for minutes you may not use.
A travel eSIM needs a phone that takes an eSIM and is not locked to a carrier: check yours in 30 seconds. For how the two approaches charge you in general, see travel eSIM vs international roaming. Our Japan eSIM page and Indonesia eSIM page compare the plans.
How to use amaysim and a travel eSIM together
amaysim itself suggests this: it says that with an eSIM compatible phone you can keep your amaysim roaming pack on an eSIM and use a local SIM at your destination. A travel eSIM works the same way.
- Install the travel eSIM at home, on Wi-Fi: iPhone or Android.
- When you land, set the travel eSIM as the line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for that eSIM.
- Leave data roaming off on your amaysim line, so it never uses your pack's data.
- If you want calls and texts on your Australian number, Small Talk ($20 for 100 minutes and 100 SMS, valid a year) covers them, and the travel eSIM carries all the data.
- Use WhatsApp or FaceTime over the eSIM's data for calls that do not need your Australian number.
amaysim's own pages do not say whether Wi-Fi calling works abroad, so do not rely on it to make calls on your amaysim number for free.
