No, not if you bought it in the US. The iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone 17e sold in the US have no SIM card slot. Apple says they are "not compatible with physical SIM cards": every line, your own number included, runs on an eSIM. The same goes for the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, and for the iPhone Air and iPhone Duo, which have no SIM card slot in any country.
US iPhones have been eSIM-only since the iPhone 14 in 2022. What is new with the iPhone 17 is that more countries get the eSIM-only version too: Canada, Mexico, Japan and the Gulf states.
For a trip, it means one thing: you cannot buy a SIM card at the airport and put it in. You add a travel eSIM instead, ideally at home before you fly, and your US number stays on next to it.
Which iPhones have a SIM card slot, and where
| Model | Bought in the US | Canada, Mexico, Japan, Gulf states | UK, Europe, Australia and most other countries | Mainland China |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max | eSIM only | eSIM only | Nano-SIM slot and eSIM | Two nano-SIM slots, no eSIM |
| iPhone 17e | eSIM only | eSIM only | Nano-SIM slot and eSIM | eSIM or nano-SIM |
| iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max | eSIM only | eSIM only | Nano-SIM slot and eSIM | eSIM or nano-SIM |
| iPhone Air | eSIM only | eSIM only | eSIM only | eSIM only |
| iPhone Duo | eSIM only | eSIM only | eSIM only | eSIM only |
| iPhone 14, 15 and 16 | eSIM only | Nano-SIM slot and eSIM | Nano-SIM slot and eSIM | Two nano-SIM slots, no eSIM |
The Gulf states are Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Guam and the US Virgin Islands get the US version.
What counts is where the phone was sold, not where you live. An iPhone 17 bought in London has a SIM card slot, even if you take it home to Chicago.

How to check if your iPhone has a SIM card slot
- Look at the left edge of the phone. A SIM tray is a thin outline with a small pinhole, below the volume buttons. No outline means no slot.
- Check the settings. Open Settings, then Cellular (or Mobile Service). An eSIM-only iPhone offers only Add eSIM, with no option for a SIM card.
Either way, check that the phone is unlocked before you travel. A locked iPhone will not accept a travel eSIM: here is how to check and unlock it.
What eSIM-only means when you travel
You cannot use a local SIM card. On a US iPhone 17 there is nowhere to put one. If a shop abroad sells you a SIM card, it will not help. Some local carriers sell tourist eSIMs, but you usually need a passport and a counter, and the line can be long at the airport.
A travel eSIM does the same job. You buy it online, install it with a QR code or a link, and it carries your data abroad. Install it at home, on Wi-Fi, on the day you leave, before you go to the airport: on most plans the days start when the eSIM first connects in a covered country, and each plan states its rule. Then switch its data on when you land. Here is how, step by step: how to add a travel eSIM on iPhone.
Your US number keeps working. An iPhone 17 runs two eSIMs at the same time and stores eight or more. Your carrier's eSIM stays on for calls and texts, including bank verification codes, while the travel eSIM carries the data. Only one line uses data at a time, and you choose which in Settings, then Cellular.
Turn off roaming on your US line. Otherwise a background app can start a carrier day pass at $10 to $12 a day. Our guides for Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile explain what triggers it.
A US iPhone 17 takes our Europe eSIM like any other phone: one install covers 30 countries, and your number stays on next to it.
Moving your number to a new iPhone 17
You do not need a SIM card for this either. With eSIM Quick Transfer, your number moves from your old iPhone to the new one during setup, if your carrier supports it. Both phones need iOS 18.4 or later, and from iOS 26 you can move more than one number. If your old phone has a physical SIM, many carriers can turn it into an eSIM during the transfer.

A travel eSIM is different: it usually cannot move to a new phone. Finish your trip on the phone you installed it on, or buy a new one for the next trip.
FAQ
Does the iPhone 17 have a SIM card slot?
Not the US version. iPhone 17 models sold in the US, Canada, Mexico, Japan and the Gulf states use eSIM only. In the UK, Europe, Australia and most other countries, the iPhone 17 has a nano-SIM slot and eSIM. In mainland China it has two nano-SIM slots.
Does the iPhone 17 Pro have a SIM card?
The same rule applies: no SIM card slot in the US, Canada, Mexico, Japan and the Gulf states, a nano-SIM slot and eSIM in most other countries.
Does the iPhone Air have a SIM card slot?
No, in no country. The iPhone Air works with eSIM only, including in mainland China. So does the iPhone Duo.
When did iPhones stop using SIM cards?
In the US, with the iPhone 14 in September 2022. Every iPhone sold in the US since then has been eSIM-only. Outside the US, most iPhones still have a SIM card slot, apart from the iPhone Air and iPhone Duo.
Can I use a local SIM card abroad with a US iPhone 17?
No, because it has no slot for one. Use a travel eSIM, or a local carrier's tourist eSIM if it sells one.
How many eSIMs can an iPhone 17 hold?
Two active at the same time, and eight or more stored. That is enough to keep your US number on and add a travel eSIM for each trip.
