Which plan fits your trip

Iceland is not on our Europe plan's list, so it is sold on our global plans, which cover it together with many other countries in one install. The plan cards above show the days and data on sale:

  • Daily data suits steady use: maps, road conditions, messages and photos every day. A Ring Road trip is steady from day to day, so this is the usual pick.
  • Fixed data suits a longer, lighter trip, where you use your guesthouse's Wi-Fi and mobile data only on the road.

See fixed, daily or unlimited for how each type behaves.

Landing at Keflavík

Almost every visitor arrives at Keflavík International, about 50 km from Reykjavík. Install the eSIM at home while you are on your own Wi-Fi, then turn on data roaming for the eSIM line once you are off the plane. You can then check your bus or rental car pickup and the road conditions before you leave the terminal.

Apps that keep you safe on the road

Weather and roads in Iceland change fast, and many visitors drive themselves. Before each day's drive, check road conditions on road.is, the weather on vedur.is and the alerts on safetravel.is, where you can also leave a travel plan. All three need data on the go, which is why a working connection matters more here than on a city trip.

Coverage on the Ring Road and beyond

Coverage is good in Reykjavík, on the Golden Circle, along most of the Ring Road and in the towns of the south coast, the north and the east. It thins out in the Westfjords between villages, on mountain passes and in the eastern fjords, and largely disappears in the Highlands, on the F-roads and on glaciers. Download offline maps before you head off the Ring Road, and keep your tour operator's number saved.

How much data do you need?

A typical traveler using maps, messaging and photos uses about 1 GB a day. Uploading northern lights videos, video calls and working from a laptop push that up, so pick the larger daily allowance if you stream or work.

Networks in Iceland

Iceland's mobile networks are Síminn, Vodafone and Nova. A travel eSIM connects to a local network as a roaming partner, which is why data roaming must be on for the eSIM line. The partner network can differ from plan to plan, so check the plan details, or ask us at support@esimlounge.com before you buy.

How to install your eSIM

Install it at home before you fly, then switch it on when you land.

  1. Check your phone

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier unlocked. Most phones from the last few years do.

  2. Scan the QR code

Scan the code from your email while you still have Wi-Fi at home. It takes about two minutes.

  3. Switch on when you land

Turn on the eSIM line and data roaming for it. Keep your usual SIM for calls and texts if you like.

Iceland eSIM questions

Does the Europe eSIM plan cover Iceland?

No. Iceland is not on our Europe plan's list, so it is sold on our global plans. If your trip continues to mainland Europe or the UK, check that every country is on the plan you buy.

Is an eSIM cheaper than my own carrier's roaming in Iceland?

Usually, yes. US and Australian carriers typically charge a daily pass for each day you use your phone abroad, and many UK plans now charge a daily fee in Europe too. Over a week-long Ring Road trip those passes add up to more than a plan here. Check your own plan's roaming terms to compare.

Does it work on the Ring Road?

Along most of it, yes, with gaps on mountain passes and in the eastern fjords. Download offline maps before long drives, and check road.is and vedur.is each morning.

Does it work in the Highlands and on glaciers?

Mostly not. Coverage largely ends on the F-roads, in the Highlands and on glaciers, so leave a travel plan on safetravel.is and download what you need before you go.

Will I keep my phone number?

Yes. Your usual SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts, and the eSIM carries your mobile data. Keep data roaming off on your usual SIM to avoid roaming fees from home.

When does the plan start counting days?

On most plans the days start when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, not when you install it. The plan details say how yours works.
