Yes, your phone will almost certainly work in Cancún. AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon include Mexico on most of their plans, so a US traveler can usually turn on roaming and go, though some plans give you only slow data there. If your plan leaves Mexico out, slows you down or charges by the day, a travel eSIM gives you full-speed data from about $2 a day while you keep your usual number for calls and texts.
Will your phone work in Cancún?
The phone itself is rarely the problem: phones sold in the US, the UK and Australia work on Mexico's networks. What changes is what your plan gives you there.
- From the US: AT&T includes Mexico on its unlimited plans, Verizon on its Unlimited plans (others pay for TravelPass), and T-Mobile on most plans, with high-speed data capped on some and slow data only on Essentials. The carrier by carrier detail is in will my phone work in Mexico?
- From the UK: Mexico sits outside the European roaming zones, so unless your plan or an add-on includes it, expect to pay for a daily or weekly pass. Check the price in your network's app before you fly.
- From Australia: Telstra's International Day Pass costs A$10 a day in Mexico with 2 GB of data, calls and texts (Telstra's roaming page, October 2026). Other networks charge their own daily rates.
A week of daily passes adds up quickly, and slow "included" data struggles with maps and ride apps. That is when a travel eSIM is the cheaper and faster choice: it is a second, data-only line, so your home SIM stays in the phone. Getting online at Cancún airport
Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi and turn on data roaming for it when you land. You will be online at immigration, before you reach the hall of transport and SIM sellers after customs. The airport's free CUN Wi-Fi works as a backup but is time-limited and built for the halls, not the pickup area outside. Our Cancún airport guide covers the Wi-Fi login, the SIM stands and the terminals.
If you want a Mexican SIM card instead, note that since 9 January 2026 every new Mexican line must be registered with ID, a passport for a visitor. A travel eSIM bought abroad needs no registration: Mexico SIM card or eSIM in 2026.
Leaving the airport by public transport, your phone matters right away. ADO buses run from the airport to downtown Cancún and to Playa del Carmen, and the Tren Maya's Cancún Aeropuerto station sits a few kilometres from the terminals, linked by a shuttle. Buy tickets in the official apps and save them to your phone so they open without a signal.
The Hotel Zone, downtown and Playa del Carmen
Coverage is strong across Cancún: along the Hotel Zone strip, downtown and in Playa del Carmen. Mexico's biggest network is Telcel, followed by AT&T Mexico, and a travel eSIM roams on one of them.
Hotel Wi-Fi covers you in the room and the lobby, but not once you leave. On the beach, by the pool or in a taxi, mobile data is what keeps your maps, Uber or DiDi and WhatsApp working.
Heading further down the coast? Our Tulum guide covers the beach road, the cenotes and where the signal drops.

Day trips and coverage
Most Cancún trips include at least one day away from the hotel. Plan your connection for each:
- Isla Mujeres: ferries leave from Puerto Juárez and the Hotel Zone for a short crossing. Save your return ferry time and an offline map of the island before you board.
- Cozumel: ferries cross from Playa del Carmen in under an hour. Travelers report a signal at both docks and a patchy one mid-crossing, and good coverage in San Miguel and along the coastal road.
- Cozumel on a cruise: on land, your eSIM or your home plan roams on Mexican networks. Back on board, your phone can switch to the ship's own network, which your home carrier bills at sea rates. Put the phone in airplane mode, or turn data roaming off on your home line, once you sail. More in eSIM for a cruise.
- Chichén Itzá: the Tren Maya stops at its own Chichén Itzá station on the line between Cancún and Mérida, about two hours from Cancún Aeropuerto on 2026 timetables. Buy and save your tickets before you go, and download offline maps of the Yucatán, since coverage thins in the countryside and the jungle around ruins.
- Cenotes: expect no signal inside the cenote itself, and a weak one on the jungle roads that lead to many of them. Download offline maps first and tell your driver where to meet you.

Which plan for which trip
A traveler using maps, ride apps, messaging and photos uses about 1 GB a day, so a daily allowance suits most Cancún holidays. Our Mexico plans on 10 October 2026:
| Your trip | Plan | Price |
|---|---|---|
| A one-day cruise stop in Cozumel | 0.6 GB, 1 day | $2.99 |
| A week at a resort with day trips | 1.5 GB a day, 7 days | $13.99 |
| Two weeks on the Riviera Maya | 1.5 GB a day, 15 days | $22.99 |
| A week of streaming, video calls or remote work | Unlimited, 7 days | $27.99 |
Set it up on the day you leave, before you go to the airport. On most plans the days start when the eSIM first connects in Mexico, not when you install it, and each plan states its rule. The unlimited plans carry a fair-use rule, shown on each plan card. Every plan, including global bundles that add the US and Canada, is on our Mexico eSIM page.
FAQ
Will my phone work in Cancún?
Yes, in almost every case. Phones from the US, the UK and Australia work on Mexico's networks, and AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon include Mexico on most of their plans as of October 2026. Some plans give only slow data there, and most UK and Australian plans charge by the day, which is when a travel eSIM is cheaper.
Do I need an eSIM for Cancún if my plan includes Mexico?
Not if your plan gives you enough full-speed data. If it is capped at a few gigabytes, slowed to 128 or 256 kbps, or charged per day, a travel eSIM is usually faster and cheaper. Our 7-day Mexico plan with 1.5 GB a day cost $13.99 on 10 October 2026.
Does an eSIM work in the Cancún Hotel Zone?
Yes. Coverage is strong along the Hotel Zone, downtown and in Playa del Carmen, on Telcel or AT&T Mexico depending on the plan. It also keeps working once you leave the hotel's Wi-Fi behind.
Will my eSIM work on Isla Mujeres and Cozumel?
On Cozumel, yes: travelers report good coverage in San Miguel and along the coastal road, with a patchy signal in the middle of the ferry crossing. On Isla Mujeres, save an offline map before you cross in case the signal is weak. On a cruise ship, the phone may switch to the ship's own network, billed by your home carrier, so use airplane mode at sea.
Can I buy a SIM card at Cancún airport?
Yes, from stands in the arrivals hall, but travelers report tourist prices of around US$50 for a few gigabytes, and since 9 January 2026 every new Mexican line must be registered with a passport. A travel eSIM installed at home needs no registration and works as soon as you land.
How much data do I need for a week in Cancún?
About 1 GB a day covers maps, Uber or DiDi, WhatsApp and photos, so 7 to 10 GB for a week. A plan with 1.5 GB a day leaves room for video calls. If you stream or work online every day, pick an unlimited plan.
