December is one of the best months for Cancún and Tulum: the hurricane season is over, and days are warm rather than hot. It is also the busiest stretch of the year, with Christmas and New Year's Eve bringing the biggest crowds and the highest prices. Here is what the official sources say about the weather, the seaweed and safety, plus how to get around and stay online through the holidays.
Weather and sea in December
Mexico's National Meteorological Service (SMN) publishes official 1991 to 2020 averages for its Cancún station. For December they are:
| December in Cancún | Official average |
|---|---|
| Daytime high | 29.4 °C (about 85 °F) |
| Night-time low | 21 °C (about 70 °F) |
| Rain | 96.6 mm (about 3.8 inches) |
| Days with rain | 11.7 |
So it is warm, with nights mild enough for dinner outside. December is not bone dry: the same table counts about a dozen days with some rain. It is still a lot drier than October, Cancún's wettest month at 277 mm on average.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, so a December trip falls after it ends.
Take the beach flags seriously. The US State Department warns that beaches in Mexico "can be dangerous due to strong currents, rip tides, and rogue waves" and says to stay out of the water when black or red flags are up.
The holiday peak: crowds and booking
The weeks around Christmas and New Year are peak season in Cancún and Tulum: hotels fill and rates climb. If your dates are fixed, book flights, hotels and any airport transfer early, and expect restaurants and tours to need a reservation over the last week of December.
Two charges catch visitors out:
- Visitax. Quintana Roo's government says this state fee is mandatory for all foreign tourists visiting the state. You pay it online at the official site, visitax.gob.mx, and keep the QR receipt on your phone.
- Tulum's ruins. INAH, the federal body that runs Mexico's archaeological sites, lists a unified ticket for the Tulum archaeological zone and the surrounding protected area of 265 pesos for foreign visitors and 80 pesos for Mexican nationals, open 8 am to 5 pm with last entry at 3:30 pm (INAH). The fees were cut in July 2026, so older blog posts quote higher prices.

Sargassum in December
Sargassum is the brown seaweed that washes up on Caribbean beaches, at its worst in the warmer months. The University of South Florida's Optical Oceanography Lab, which tracks it by satellite, said in its bulletin of 30 September 2026 that amounts were still above most past years but falling in every region, and that "Sargassum amount in all regions will continue to decrease until possibly November." It added that beaching events around the Caribbean "will continue, but not as severe as in the summer months" (USF Sargassum Watch, September 2026 bulletin).
USF says its outlook is regional and should not be used to predict conditions on a specific beach. Check its newest monthly bulletin, published at the end of each month, the week before you fly.
New Year's Eve in Cancún and Tulum
Cancún. For the last two New Year's Eves the city government of Benito Juárez, the municipality that includes Cancún, has thrown a public party at the Malecón Tajamar, the waterfront promenade on the lagoon. On 31 December 2025 it drew about eight thousand people, with live bands and a drone show for the countdown, according to the city's press release of 1 January 2026. The city had not announced the 2026 edition by 10 October 2026; watch its official channels in December.

Beyond that, New Year's Eve in Cancún is mostly hotel galas, Hotel Zone clubs and beach dinners, most of them ticketed, so book early.
Tulum. Tulum has no official city-wide countdown that we could verify. The night is spread across beach clubs, hotels and restaurants along the beach road and in town, each with its own ticketed party. Book ahead, and arrange your ride home before midnight, when everyone wants a car at once.
Getting around
- From Cancún airport. Our Cancún airport guide covers the terminals, the free Wi-Fi and where to find transport after customs.
- ADO buses. ADO, the region's main bus company, runs from the airport to downtown Cancún and Playa del Carmen, with connections on to Tulum. Buy tickets at its counters or online, and save them to your phone.
- Tren Maya. The train links its Cancún station with Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Tulum airport to the south, and Mérida and Chichén Itzá to the west. The official timetable shows only a handful of trains a day on each route, so check it and buy tickets on trenmaya.gob.mx before you plan a day around it.
- Taxis and rides. The State Department's advice for US government staff in Mexico, which it strongly advises other US citizens to follow, is to use dispatched vehicles from regulated taxi stands or app-based services, not to wave down taxis on the street, and not to travel between cities after dark.
Safety
The State Department rates Mexico as a whole at Level 2, "Exercise increased caution", in an advisory issued on 29 May 2026. Quintana Roo, the state that includes Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Cozumel, is also at Level 2, "due to terrorism and crime". Its entry for the state reads:
There is a risk of violence in the state from terrorist groups, cartels, gangs and criminal organizations. Shootings between rival gangs have injured and killed innocent bystanders. U.S. citizens have been the victims of both non-violent and violent crimes in tourist and non-tourist area.
It tells visitors to "pay attention to your surroundings after dark" and to "remain in well-lit pedestrian streets and tourist zones". For a big night out it also warns that criminals sometimes drug drinks, so watch yours, and it suggests the Quintana Roo government's Guest Assist app for emergency numbers and tourist help. The emergency number in Mexico is 911. Read the full advisory before you go, as it can change.
Staying connected over the holidays
Your phone does a lot of work on a December trip: boarding passes, the Visitax receipt, train and bus tickets, ride apps, maps between cenotes and the group chat that finds everyone at midnight.
- Countdown crowds slow mobile data. When thousands of phones share the same cell towers, as on the Malecón or a Tulum beach at midnight, messages lag and pages crawl. Agree on a meeting point and a time beforehand, and send your midnight videos once the crowd thins.
- Book your ride home before the countdown, or line up at a taxi stand early. Ride apps struggle when the network is saturated and everyone requests a car at once.
- Download offline maps of Cancún, the Riviera Maya and Tulum before you leave home. Coverage thins in the jungle around ruins and cenotes and on the roads between towns.
- Check whether your US plan includes Mexico. Most AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon plans do, but some only at slow speeds: see will my phone work in Mexico?
- Buying a Mexican SIM now means registration. Since January 2026 every new Mexican line has to be registered to its user, with a passport for a visitor: Mexico SIM card or eSIM in 2026.
A travel eSIM installed at home is the simplest fix: a data-only line that works as soon as you land, with your US number still on your usual SIM. Our eSIM for Cancún guide covers the airport, the Hotel Zone and day trips, and our Mexico eSIM page compares the plans.
FAQ
Is December a good time to visit Cancún?
Yes, for most travelers. It comes after the hurricane season, and the official averages are a high of about 85 °F and a low of about 70 °F. The catch is the holiday peak: the last two weeks of December are busy and expensive, so book early or aim for the first half of the month.
Is there sargassum in Cancún in December?
Usually less than in summer. The University of South Florida expected sargassum to keep declining across the region until around November 2026, with beaching events continuing but less severe than in summer. It cannot forecast a specific beach, so check its latest bulletin before you travel.
Does it rain in Cancún in December?
Some. Mexico's weather service averages 96.6 mm of rain over about 12 rainy days in December. That is about a third of October's rainfall.
Where do people celebrate New Year's Eve in Cancún?
The city has held a public party at the Malecón Tajamar for the last two years, with music and a drone show at midnight, and many hotels and Hotel Zone clubs hold ticketed parties. The city had not confirmed the 2026 party by 10 October 2026.
Is Cancún safe at New Year?
The State Department rates Quintana Roo at Level 2, "Exercise increased caution", as of its 29 May 2026 advisory. It advises staying aware after dark, keeping to well-lit tourist areas, watching your drink and using taxi stands or app-based rides rather than street taxis.
Will my phone work in Cancún over Christmas?
Most US phones and plans work in Mexico, but data slows in packed places at midnight, and some plans give only slow speeds there. Download offline maps and tickets before you go, and consider a travel eSIM if your plan leaves Mexico out.
