Which Taiwan plan fits your trip
Taiwan plans come in three shapes. The plan cards above show the days and data on sale:
- Daily data suits steady use: maps, messaging, translation and social media every day.
- Fixed data gives one allowance for the whole trip, to use heavily one day and lightly the next.
- Unlimited suits heavy users, streaming and remote work. A fair-use policy applies; the plan details say how.
See fixed, daily or unlimited for how each type behaves.
Coverage across Taiwan
Coverage is strong in Taipei, New Taipei, Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung, including the MRT systems, and along the high-speed rail line down the west coast. The east coast and the mountains are different: in Taroko Gorge, around Alishan and Sun Moon Lake's hiking trails, and on high mountain roads, signal can be weak or missing in places on any network. Download offline maps and save train and bus tickets before you head out of the cities.
Arriving at the airport
Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi a day or two before you fly. When you land at Taoyuan, Taipei Songshan or Kaohsiung, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line only and keep it off on your usual SIM. You can then check the Airport MRT or bus into Taipei, book a taxi or message your hotel straight away.
How much data do you need?
Most visitors use 0.5 to 1.5 GB a day for maps, messaging, translation and photos. Video calls, streaming and sharing your connection with a laptop push that up quickly: pick a larger allowance or an unlimited plan for those.
Visiting more than Taiwan?
The Asia Pacific plan covers Taiwan together with Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and other destinations in one install, and the global plans cover it too. Check the country list on the plan before you buy.
Networks in Taiwan
Taiwan's main mobile networks are Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile and FarEasTone. A travel eSIM connects to one of them as a roaming partner, which is why data roaming must be on for the eSIM line. The partner network can differ from plan to plan, so check the plan details, or ask us at support@esimlounge.com before you buy.
How to install your eSIM
Install it at home before you fly, then switch it on when you land.
Check your phone
Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier unlocked. Most phones from the last few years do.
Scan the QR code
Scan the code from your email while you still have Wi-Fi at home. It takes about two minutes.
Switch on when you land
Turn on the eSIM line and data roaming for it. Keep your usual SIM for calls and texts if you like.
Taiwan eSIM questions
Will the eSIM work in Taroko Gorge and the mountains?
In the towns and at the main visitor areas, usually yes. On mountain roads and hiking trails, signal can be weak or missing on any network, so download offline maps and tell someone your route before a long hike.
Does it work on the MRT and the high-speed rail?
Yes. Coverage on the Taipei and Kaohsiung MRT and along the high-speed rail line is good, with brief drops in some tunnels.
Can I use the same eSIM in Japan or Hong Kong?
A Taiwan plan works in Taiwan only. The Asia Pacific plan covers Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and other destinations with one install.
Does the eSIM come with a Taiwanese phone number?
No. The plans are data only. If you need a local number, a tourist SIM from an airport counter gives you one.
Will I keep my phone number?
Yes. Your usual SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts, and the eSIM carries your mobile data. Keep data roaming off on your usual SIM to avoid roaming fees.
