Which plan fits your trip

Most visitors combine Macau with Hong Kong, and many go on to mainland China. Our Hong Kong, Macau and China plans cover all three in one install, and they are listed with the regional and global plans above. The plan cards show the days and data on sale:

  • Daily data suits steady use: maps, messages and photos every day.
  • Fixed data gives a large allowance for a short, busy stay, such as a weekend between Hong Kong and Macau.
  • Unlimited suits heavy users and business travelers. A fair-use policy applies; the plan details say how.

See fixed, daily or unlimited for how each type behaves, and our Hong Kong and China pages if your trip continues there.

Getting to Macau

Macau International Airport sits on Taipa, close to Cotai and a short drive from the peninsula. From Hong Kong, shuttle buses cross the Hong Kong to Zhuhai to Macau bridge around the clock, and high-speed ferries also run, with fewer sailings than before, so check the timetable on the day. Install the eSIM at home while you are on your own Wi-Fi, then turn on data roaming for the eSIM line when you arrive. You can then check the free hotel shuttle buses that run between the arrival points, the casinos and the old town.

Coverage

Coverage in Macau is strong everywhere visitors go: the historic centre around Senado Square and the Ruins of St. Paul's, Taipa village, the Cotai Strip and Coloane. Macau's internet is open, so Google, WhatsApp and Instagram work as they do at home. If you cross the Border Gate into Zhuhai, you are in mainland China, where those services are blocked on local connections: see our China page before you go.

How much data do you need?

A typical traveler using maps, messaging and photos uses about 1 GB a day. Video calls, streaming and working from a laptop push that up, so business travelers are better served by a large fixed plan or unlimited.

Networks in Macau

Macau's mobile networks are CTM, the largest, and China Telecom (Macau). Hutchison's 3 Macau is due to end its mobile service on 1 December 2026. A travel eSIM connects to a local network as a roaming partner, which is why data roaming must be on for the eSIM line. The partner network can differ from plan to plan, so check the plan details, or ask us at support@esimlounge.com before you buy.

How to install your eSIM

Install it at home before you fly, then switch it on when you land.

  1. Check your phone

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier unlocked. Most phones from the last few years do.

  2. Scan the QR code

Scan the code from your email while you still have Wi-Fi at home. It takes about two minutes.

  3. Switch on when you land

Turn on the eSIM line and data roaming for it. Keep your usual SIM for calls and texts if you like.

Macau eSIM questions

Is an eSIM cheaper than my own carrier's roaming in Macau?

Usually, by a wide margin. UK, US and Australian carriers typically charge a daily pass for each day you use your phone abroad, and over a few days those passes cost more than a plan here. Check your own plan's roaming terms to compare.

Does a Hong Kong eSIM work in Macau?

Not automatically. Hong Kong and Macau are separate destinations for an eSIM. Our Hong Kong, Macau and China plans cover both in one install, as do the regional and global plans that list Macau.

How do I get from Hong Kong to Macau?

By shuttle bus across the Hong Kong to Zhuhai to Macau bridge, which runs around the clock, or by high-speed ferry, which now runs fewer sailings than before. Both involve immigration on each side.

Do Google and WhatsApp work in Macau?

Yes. Macau's internet is open, so Google, WhatsApp and Instagram work as they do at home. Mainland China, across the border in Zhuhai, is different: they are blocked on local connections there.

Will I keep my phone number?

Yes. Your usual SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts, and the eSIM carries your mobile data. Keep data roaming off on your usual SIM to avoid roaming fees from home.

When does the plan start counting days?

On most plans the days start when the eSIM first connects to a network in a covered place, not when you install it. The plan details say how yours works.
