Which plan fits your trip
Vanuatu is sold on our global plans, which cover it together with more than 160 other countries in one install, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji included. The plan cards above show the days and data on sale:
- The one-day plan suits a cruise stop in Port Vila, at Mystery Island or at Champagne Bay.
- Daily data suits a resort week on Efate or a trip to Santo and Tanna: messages, photos, maps and the odd video call home.
See fixed, daily or unlimited for how each type behaves.
Arriving by air or by sea
Most visitors fly into Bauerfield International in Port Vila, many from Australia, or arrive on a cruise ship. Install the eSIM at home while you are on your own Wi-Fi, then turn on data roaming for the eSIM line when you arrive. On a cruise, switch it on once the ship is in port, and keep data roaming off on your usual SIM: at sea, ships use their own satellite service, which a travel eSIM does not cover.
Coverage on the islands
Coverage is good in Port Vila and around Efate's main road, and in Luganville on Espiritu Santo. It is patchier on the outer islands, including around Mount Yasur on Tanna, on remote beaches such as Champagne Bay, and on the small islands cruise ships visit, where signal can be weak or missing. Resort Wi-Fi is often limited to the main building. Save your flight, ferry and tour details to the phone before you head out.
How much data do you need?
A typical traveler using maps, messaging and photos uses about 1 GB a day. Video calls home and sharing holiday videos push that up, so pick the larger daily allowance if you stream or work.
Networks in Vanuatu
Vanuatu has two mobile networks, Digicel and Vodafone. A travel eSIM connects to one of them as a roaming partner, which is why data roaming must be on for the eSIM line. The partner network can differ from plan to plan, so check the plan details, or ask us at support@esimlounge.com before you buy.
How to install your eSIM
Install it at home before you fly, then switch it on when you land.
Check your phone
Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier unlocked. Most phones from the last few years do.
Scan the QR code
Scan the code from your email while you still have Wi-Fi at home. It takes about two minutes.
Switch on when you land
Turn on the eSIM line and data roaming for it. Keep your usual SIM for calls and texts if you like.
Vanuatu eSIM questions
Is an eSIM cheaper than my own carrier's roaming in Vanuatu?
Usually, yes. Australian, New Zealand, UK and US carriers typically charge a daily pass for each day you use your phone abroad, and over a week those passes add up to more than a plan here. Check your own plan's roaming terms to compare.
Does it work on a cruise stop in Vanuatu?
In Port Vila, yes. At Mystery Island, Champagne Bay and other small stops the signal can be weak or missing. At sea the ship uses its own satellite service, which the eSIM does not cover.
Is there signal on Tanna and at Mount Yasur?
Patchy. Some villages on Tanna have signal, but expect gaps around the volcano and in remote areas. Save your tour details before you fly from Port Vila.
Can I use the same eSIM in Australia, New Zealand or Fiji?
Yes, if the countries are on the plan's list. Vanuatu is sold on our global plans, which include Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, so one install covers a trip through all of them.
Will I keep my phone number?
Yes. Your usual SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts, and the eSIM carries your mobile data. Keep data roaming off on your usual SIM to avoid roaming fees from home.
When does the plan start counting days?
On most plans the days start when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, not when you install it. The plan details say how yours works.
