Countries covered

One eSIM works in every one of them, with no swap at the border.

Why one plan for both

Hong Kong and Macau are separate destinations for an eSIM: a Hong Kong plan does not automatically work in Macau. This bundle covers both, so a few days in Hong Kong with a trip across to Macau needs one install. If you are staying in Hong Kong only, the plans on our Hong Kong page cost the same or a little less.

Going on to mainland China? This plan does not cover it, including Zhuhai and Hengqin just across Macau's border. For a trip that crosses into Shenzhen, Guangzhou or further, take the Hong Kong, Macau and China plan instead.

Which plan fits your trip

  • Daily data, 0.6 GB or 1.5 GB a day for 3, 5, 7 or 15 days, or 1.5 GB a day for 30 days. Suits steady use every day: maps, messages, payments and photos. After the day's allowance, speed drops until it resets.
  • Unlimited, for 3, 5 or 15 days. Suits heavy users, video calls and business travelers. A fair-use policy applies; the plan details say how.
  • A one-day plan with 0.6 GB, for a day trip or a layover.

See fixed, daily or unlimited for how each type behaves.

Getting between them

Shuttle buses cross the Hong Kong to Zhuhai to Macau bridge around the clock, and high-speed ferries also run between the two. Keep your data on for bus and ferry times and to message your hotel on arrival. Each crossing has immigration on both sides: check the entry rules for your passport before you go.

Before you fly

  1. Check your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked: the 30-second check.
  2. Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi: iPhone or Android.
  3. When you land, switch data roaming on for the eSIM line only.

Networks in Hong Kong and Macau

The plan connects to a local partner network in each place, so data roaming must be on for the eSIM line. Both are compact and densely covered, including the MTR in Hong Kong. Want to know which network a plan uses where? Ask us at support@esimlounge.com.

How to install your eSIM

Install it at home before you fly, then switch it on when you land.

  1. Check your phone

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier unlocked. Most phones from the last few years do.

  2. Scan the QR code

Scan the code from your email while you still have Wi-Fi at home. It takes about two minutes.

  3. Switch on when you land

Turn on the eSIM line and data roaming for it. Keep your usual SIM for calls and texts if you like.

Hong Kong and Macau eSIM questions

Does this plan work in mainland China?

No. It covers Hong Kong and Macau only, not Zhuhai, Hengqin or anywhere else across the border. For a trip into the mainland, take the Hong Kong, Macau and China plan.

Do I need a separate eSIM for Macau?

Not with this plan. One install covers both, so your data keeps working when you cross from Hong Kong to Macau and back.

Is an eSIM cheaper than my own carrier's roaming in Hong Kong and Macau?

Usually, by a wide margin. UK, US and Australian carriers typically charge a daily pass for each day you use your phone abroad, and over a week those passes cost several times more than a plan here. Check your own plan's roaming terms to compare.

Will Google and WhatsApp work?

Yes. Hong Kong and Macau do not block them, so your usual apps work as at home.

Will I keep my phone number?

Yes. Your usual SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts, and the eSIM carries your mobile data. Keep data roaming off on your usual SIM to avoid roaming fees from home.

When does the plan start counting days?

On most plans the days start when the eSIM first connects to a network in a covered place, not when you install it. The plan details say how yours works.
