Which plan fits your trip
Jamaica is sold on our global plans, which cover it together with more than 160 other countries in one install. They suit a resort week as well as a Caribbean cruise or a trip that goes on to the Cayman Islands, the Dominican Republic or Mexico. The plan cards above show the days and data on sale:
- Daily data suits steady use: messages, photos, maps on excursions and the odd video call home. Most resort and touring trips are steady from day to day, so this is the usual pick.
- The one-day plan suits a cruise stop in Falmouth, Montego Bay or Ocho Rios.
See fixed, daily or unlimited for how each type behaves.
Landing in Jamaica
Most visitors arrive at Sangster airport in Montego Bay, the gateway to the north coast resorts, or at Norman Manley airport in Kingston. Install the eSIM at home while you are on your own Wi-Fi, then turn on data roaming for the eSIM line once you are off the plane. You can then message your transfer or hotel before you reach the exit.
In the resorts
All-inclusive resorts in Montego Bay, Negril and Ocho Rios usually have Wi-Fi, but it is often strongest in the lobby and weak on the beach or in rooms far from the main building. An eSIM keeps you online wherever you are on the property, and on days out to Dunn's River Falls, the Blue Hole or Seven Mile Beach, where hotel Wi-Fi does not follow you.
Coverage on the coast and inland
Coverage is good in Montego Bay, Negril, Ocho Rios, Falmouth, Kingston and along the north coast highway. It thins out in the Blue Mountains, in Cockpit Country, on inland roads between the coasts and along parts of the quieter south coast around Treasure Beach. Download offline maps before a road trip, and save your tickets and bookings to the phone.
How much data do you need?
A typical traveler using maps, messaging and photos uses about 1 GB a day. Video calls, streaming by the pool and sharing your connection push that up, so pick the larger daily allowance if you stream or work.
Networks in Jamaica
Jamaica's mobile networks are Digicel and Flow. A travel eSIM connects to one of them as a roaming partner, which is why data roaming must be on for the eSIM line. The partner network can differ from plan to plan, so check the plan details, or ask us at support@esimlounge.com before you buy.
How to install your eSIM
Install it at home before you fly, then switch it on when you land.
Check your phone
Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier unlocked. Most phones from the last few years do.
Scan the QR code
Scan the code from your email while you still have Wi-Fi at home. It takes about two minutes.
Switch on when you land
Turn on the eSIM line and data roaming for it. Keep your usual SIM for calls and texts if you like.
Jamaica eSIM questions
Is an eSIM cheaper than my own carrier's roaming in Jamaica?
Usually, yes. UK, US and Australian carriers typically charge a daily pass for each day you use your phone abroad, and over a week those passes add up to more than a plan here. Check your own plan's roaming terms to compare.
Do I need an eSIM if my resort has Wi-Fi?
Resort Wi-Fi is often weak away from the lobby and does not follow you on excursions, transfers or days out. An eSIM keeps you online on the beach, on the way from the airport and on trips to the falls or the Blue Mountains.
Does it work on a cruise stop in Jamaica?
Yes, in port and near the coast, when the phone can reach a land network. At sea the ship uses its own satellite service, which the eSIM does not cover, so keep data roaming off on your usual SIM to avoid the ship's charges.
Should I buy a SIM card at the airport instead?
For data, an eSIM is simpler: you set it up at home, skip the counter in arrivals and keep your usual SIM in the phone. A local SIM gives you a Jamaican phone number, which a travel eSIM does not. For maps and messaging, the eSIM does the job.
Can I use the same eSIM in the Cayman Islands or Mexico?
Yes, if the countries are on the plan's list. Jamaica is sold on our global plans, so one install keeps you online across the countries the plan covers. Check the list on the plan before you buy.
Will I keep my phone number?
Yes. Your usual SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts, and the eSIM carries your mobile data. Keep data roaming off on your usual SIM to avoid roaming fees from home.
When does the plan start counting days?
On most plans the days start when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, not when you install it. The plan details say how yours works.
