A Pixel 3 bought in Australia, Japan or Taiwan, or with service from a US or Canadian carrier other than Sprint or Google Fi, has no eSIM. Google names no other exception, so one bought in the UK or Europe works with eSIM. Check yours with *#06#: an EID means eSIM.

Pixel 3 XL2018Some versions

A Pixel 3 XL bought in Australia, Japan or Taiwan, or with service from a US or Canadian carrier other than Sprint or Google Fi, has no eSIM. Google gives this rule for the Pixel 3 (2018) generation and names no other exception, so one bought in the UK or Europe works with eSIM. Check yours with *#06#: an EID means eSIM.

Pixel 22017Some versions

Only phones bought with Google Fi service work with eSIM, so a travel eSIM will not install on any other Pixel 2. To get data abroad, see what to do when your phone has no eSIM.

Pixel 2 XL2017Some versions

Google's rule for the Pixel 2 generation: only phones bought with Google Fi service work with eSIM, so a travel eSIM will not install on any other Pixel 2 XL. To get data abroad, see what to do when your phone has no eSIM.

Pixel2016No

Google says no original Pixel (2016) works with eSIM. Pixel phones have eSIM from the Pixel 3 onward. To get data abroad, see what to do when your phone has no eSIM.

Pixel XL2016No

How to check your phone in a minute

  1. Dial *#06#

Open the phone app and dial *#06#. If a number labelled EID appears, your phone supports eSIM.

  2. On an iPhone

Go to Settings, then Cellular (or Mobile Data). If you see Add eSIM or Add Cellular Plan, it supports eSIM.

  3. On Android

Go to Settings, then Network and internet, then SIMs. If you can add an eSIM or download a SIM, it supports eSIM.

  4. Check it is unlocked

A phone bought from a carrier on contract may be locked to it. Ask your carrier, or look for a Carrier Lock line in your settings that says No SIM restrictions.

eSIM compatibility questions

How do I know if my phone supports eSIM?

Dial *#06#. If an EID number appears, it does. You can also look for an Add eSIM option in your mobile network settings.

Does my phone need to be unlocked?

Yes. A phone locked to one carrier refuses an eSIM from another network. Phones bought outright are usually unlocked; ask your carrier if yours came on a contract.

Why does my model show as supported but my phone has no eSIM?

Some versions sold in particular countries leave eSIM out, most often in mainland China. The notes beside each model say which.

Can I keep my usual SIM while using a travel eSIM?

On most phones, yes: the travel eSIM carries your data while your usual SIM keeps your number for calls and texts.
